Just got home from a week there I wish I had my vacation during Speed Weeks at Daytona ! Couldn't work that out, unfortunately. The Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona would be the next best thing to seeing the 24 Heures duMans (Lemans 24 Hours) . I think. Maybe someday soon, I'll find out!

The backfires in turns, on the turbo Porsches, make the night racing more enjoyable

Ferrari of Atlanta was testing at the track while I was there, saw the trucks but not the cars.

I followed the Saleen hauler down I95 to Daytona on the 31st... he got off and turned toward the Speedway. Also while on the road, I saw lots of WKA race trailers heading north... they had their season finale at Daytona last weekend... . but, there is a sad note: they had a fatal accident. Im not sure which class he was racing in (some karts do around 150mph in the banking!). The article I saw about the incident said the driver was 17 years old, from Ohio, and a part failure is suspect. He was entering the tri-oval and the kart suddenly pitched right and he hit the outside wall backwards. The WKA uses the entire Daytona circuit: infield and banking. This was the 4th fatality at Daytona this year... the most in a single year since 1959.

I watched some of the WKA, didn't see the fatal crash. How sad for the kid & his family. The karts are hellaciously fast, more than one would think. Stiil, I believe their safety record has been good, compared to other racing. What a far cry from the days of my little 'ol Margay sprint kart with the 125cc McCulloch 2 stroke.
