courtsey lights on running boards

Would like to hook up courtsey lights on running boards. Does anyone know the wire color or where i could pick up my hot lead to accuate these lights when the door would be opened or you unlocked the truck etc. It looks like the interior lights work off the door latch ,but that is only a guess at how it works. I have a 2004. 5 3500 quad cab truck and any thoughts would be helpful. thanks robert

i have my running board lights wired into the regular light switch so they come with my other lights. if you want them on with dome lights not sure which wire. i know there is a blank fuse space not used in the fuse box under the hood but not sure if that will help. maybe there is a fuse just for the dome and you could use those prongs that fit under the fuses. not sure if this helps.

Hey Rob you need to go to the A pillar which is where we normally put our gauges and test for a yellow/lt blue or a yellow/orange wire. It will show positive when the doors are open. However I would use a relay to power the running board lights and use the trigger wire to activate the relay. I can tell you how to wire a relay if you dont know how to. The trigger wire is the feed that powers your interior light so whenever that light goes on the running board lights will go on. Hope this helps you, JD.

I too would like to do this. I have mounted the led lights on my steps but have not wired them to anything. I have a 30amp relay and I am trying to figure out where to get the taillight wire connected to them so they come on when the lights come on.

Now I want to know how to have the lights on the steps come on when someone opens a door. you said to go to the a pillar and find the wire color. but how do I wire the relay? I can figure out to run the wires where they need to go just don't know how to wire the relay.

Can anyone help me wire this correctly? if someone can post a diagram that would be great. Oo.
