1. Is the automatic transmission or 48RE in the common rail trucks still dependant on throttle movement for line pressure in the transmission?

2. If it is then will the Smarty CR cause transmission failure due to less throttle movement with more performance per linuar movement of throttle?

1. pre 05 uses the cable, post uses electronics.

2. Any enhancement has that potential, hopefully you have been following the threads and have seen the recommended power level for the stock trans guys.

If you look at my signature on the 99... that is why the questions. No, I have not been following most of the posts for modified trucks. Wasn't going to go down that road again but Marco has me intreged and before I buy any aftermarket part I like to do some research on it. What is the recommended extra Hp before transmission upgrades?

O. K. so the 06 is electronics. Does the Smarty incorporate in their downloads to adjust for my question in my first post. The older trucks you could to a certain point move the TV cable.

We will soon see when they arrive!

Basically, i am thinking no, but I have been wrong more than once . . . .

I think if you were to do an upgraded valve body, like a Suncoast for example, you would have no issues.

If line pressure is controled by both electronics and hydralic you would think someone would incorporate that into their software to be downloaded into the ecm to help protect the transmission from damage. We know that increasing hp also means it comes on at a lower throttle setting. Increasing throttle response also means less throttle movement to do the same as before the programmer.

Increase line pressure at a lower throttle setting with increased hp at a lower throttle setting would be the ultimate power programmer.

Did the CR smarty (Marco) miss this detail?

Line pressure is not controlled electronically. It is still a manual function of the vb and can only be raised and lowered thru the vb. What is controlled by the ecm is gov. pressure and in the 4. 5 and up trucks is the TVVA. The TV cable was replaced by the TVVA which is an acctuator that controls the TV in the vb. The newer trans is more aggressive due to the ecm "controlling" the function of the trans. Is it better... yes and no but it is what we have. The thing with the smarty has been that for auto trucks, even the auto trucks seem to hunt for gears since the power is there before the trans know what is going on sort of speak. Know I know Marco has been working on software updates to correct this but it is a work in progress. I had the smarty CR and loved the features but kept loosing second gear(the trans skiped second gear sort of speak. . 1 to 3 gear shift or it would shift to second then third and back down to second)even after the first set of updates and I purchased the smarty due to TQ managment delete. I do have built transmission for reference and the smarty ran with this transmission. I have since sold the smarty and am running a tst pmcr w/rail pressure am adding an mp-8 to stack. I am very happy with the tst and the adjustability it has and have not had transmission shift issues since.

Also for stock trannies I don't recommend more than 30 hp increase. I have seen trannies live with 60 or more but your on borrowed time. Meaning that it depends on how that tech that build your transmission was feeling that day.

For what it is worth not all 05's have the shift issues ;) Mine works just fine :D Talk to any of the hi-po trans shops and I think you will find some 05's take kindly to upgrades some do not. If there are issues in your stock unit it is going to be magnified when you upgrade.

I agree with you Bob... that not all 05 have shift problems but the problems usually start with the ecm updates that the smarty does... stock ecm programming the problem is not there. It has been documented in many of the smarty treads here and on the DTR by other members excluding myself. I like the smarty but will wait till the bugs get ironed out to purchase another one again.

Most power adders allow the throttle position to change and pressure rise to take affect before the power "hits". The smarty is so fast and violent with the initial surge of power that the trans does not have time to react. In other words, depending on your driving style you could wipe out a transmission pretty quick with a smarty.

My stock 48re had the “Hunt for gears” problem and the 1-2, 2-1, 1-3 shifting. When I loaded the first original Smarty program the problem was compounded. I am currently running Marco’s 3rd software version and I no longer have the problem. The shifts are positive and the transmissions go’s through the gears, it no longer hunts. The shifts get progressively aggressive depending on the throttle position. So, the Smarty, more or less, fixed my shift problems. I think down the road I will still upgrade my transmission. I’m currently running SW3, 60hp w/timing.
