Cracked Blcok

I have a friend that has a 1999 4X4 2500 with a auto. He truck was leaking coolant coming from the rear of the motor. He took it down to the Dodge dealer and he was told that he had a cracked block. He only has 19000 miles on it and is stock as can be. He got it back today. They replaced the block with a brand new one and reused to old head.
I was looking over his invoice and it said they reground the valves. Why would they have to do this?? He has just joined the TDR but doesn't have a computer.

I experianced a water leak in my 1999 2500 while comming home from Montana. When I got it into the dealer, I was told that there was a small crack in the block. Since it is still under warranty, they said they would put in a new short block. Do you think this a fair solution or should I raise hell for a new motor. It seems to me a short block is like getting an overhauled engine. The truck only has 25000 miles on it.

Search long and hard in the search area and I think you will see the history.

when they replace the block with a new block. they should, or do put on new rings,
so who is to say that it is not new. Break in wise, any way.
Block casting number on left front corner of block just above pan rail with # 53 can break on right side between cylinders 4and5. due to heat cycling, heavy towing with little or no cool down. MY . 02,

This guy never towed any thing. It was probaly a defected block. If it was me I would have asked for a whole new motor. Just bad luck I guess.

He got a new short block. They reused the old head. Why did they have to grind the valves?? I don't understand.

maybe they decided that while it was out to check and redo , its not hurting anything uless they made it worse .

I would assume the dealer put in a new service Short Block. The pistons, rings, crankshaft, rods, bearings etc. ALL assembled by Cummins at the factory. Dealer salvaged the head, inj. pump, maybe oil pump, valve covers etc. and installed on the new block.
