Archived Cracked Block

I have a 99 24 valve the block is cracked about 2 inches below the freeze plug on the curved part of the block it is about 3 inches long horizontal. I thought it was a cast iron block and tried to weld it with cast rods. Its hard to weld and is still leaking.

can anyone help before I buy a new block? $$$$$$$$$$

I know there have been several threads on here about the cracked blocks and they have been repaired in some instances. I don't remember specifics.



If it helps your feelings any, I have a '99 with a "53" block too.

Cracked

There are several ways to repair cracks in cast iron, all highly specialized. There is someone in my area who advertises in the paper at times. One of the methods is called "core lock" and I believe it invlves drillling, tapping and installing overlapping metal in the crack. There are some good rods available for repairing cast iron, again, there is a procedure to follow which involves preheating, slow cooldown etc. Look in your local phone directory and find a welding supply and talk to them about electodes for this application. bg

I hope you had over 100K miles on your truck since it would of been covered under warranty with less than 100K. Do a search on cracked blocks, there was a thread several months ago where members who had fixed them gave several examples of what they did.
