I had to post this because it was quite funny and maybe true. Last week my dads 99 truck had the famous 53 block and sure enough she let go at 89k. The dealer "Dave Smith Moters in Kellog" got the truck back together in a week and 1/2. Now for the funny part my dad has a buddy with a 99 and was asking the mechanic how to find the 53 on the block and the mechanic replied he only needed to check for the number if it was a red truck because all 6 failures they have had at Dave Smiths have been in red 99 trucks. Anyone out there have a different color then red and have a cracked block?

re: red truck comment... ... ... ... ... reminds me of a little saying I got via fax today... ... .....

If ignorance is bliss, why aren't more people happy!!!!

I have a 98. 5. Looked quickly for the #53, but unable to see any number there just now. Will check when I have time to get up under the truck with better light.

What was the range of manufacture for the #53 block? Any other indication, such as serial number or origin?

If mine is a #53, I'll keep my fingers crossed, I'm within 50 miles of 150k.

BTW My truck is gray (silver?) for whatever that's worth! :)

LOL, and only black trucks get above 20 MPG while blue trucks have two speed rear ends. And green trucks don't smoke since they are tree huggers at heart. :)
