Cracked Brake Rotor

I just got a call from the dealer indicating I had a crack in my rotor. I have 61,000 miles on my truck, most on the highway. The pads, while thin, are sufficient not to have a metal on metal problem. The service rep told me that this is the first crack he's seen in 10 years of working in a Dodge shop. If nothing else, it's a dangerous situation if there was a catastrophic failure. I have an extended warranty which excludes rotors from the coverage. Anyone else run into this?

The driver's side rear rotor on my brother-in-law's '04. 5 cracked and seperated where the center drum meets the outer friction surface. As hard as his truck is worked, it didn't surprise us. We just chalked it up to being from one of the times that that truck has been banged off a rock or dropped off a bank, or just from being generally abused.

my bro-n-laws Ford has cracked the rotors several times. I've just chalked his up to being over worked. There have been times his trailer brakes didnt work right which forced him to use more of his service brakes. The last rotors I pulled from it showed signs of being overheated. One had small surface cracks all the way around and the other had completely split open in two spots that were 180* from each other. Bad wheel bearings can cause rotors to crack also.

It happens, anything subjected to multiple thermal changes will eventually stress. This is the first I've heard of it in the Dodges, but they are susceptable just like any others.



As far as the service guy claiming to have never seen it, doubtful he would see them as the mechanic would just change it.
