My 01 has not cracked yet... why? because when my truck was new, I bought a carpet cover and has been on there ever since... ... 71 K miles, 6 years... . and it still looks new.

Mine hasn't cracked either,, Why?

I have no freakin' clue. It's hotter than hatties down here, and temps swing wildly. 80* at night, 120* in the day. Then you hit the A/C and drop it cooler. .

I guess I'm not part of the elusive club yet...

LOL, just wait, your turn is coming. The other day I went to lunch with a guy I work with and he had his fathers Dodge for the day. As we got in I noticed on the dash that there was a crack from the defrost all the way up. I didn't say anything, but I kind of had to chuckle as I though about my 97. :-laf

Biodegradable Dash

My new 99 TD developed cracks in the dash at around thirty thousand miles. I did not notice them until I decided to clean under the dash mat that was in place since the truck was new. By that time the truck had about thirty nine thousand miles on her and was out of warranty... No joy with the dealer. A few months ago I called my insurance company (GEICO) to inquire why my rates were a bit high and I was told that I opted to buy their 100,000 bumper to bumper maintenance program. Hmmm... very interesting. Out of warranty, I had to replace a A/C condenser and Fuel tank sender. Presenting those invoices to GEICO I was reimbursed in a week. I had difficulty documenting that my dash was toast prior to the 100,000 mile coverage. At the time I contacted GEICO the truck had 110,000 miles. Then I came across a post I made in '04 regarding the dash. Upon presenting a printout of that post to the agent they authorized complete replacement of my dash, bezel and glove box... Not too bad.

Now, I'm a flyfishing guide in the lower Florida Keys and I was fishing a couple of folks last week who are chemists. During the drive to where I launch my flats skiff the guy mentioned that he has a 2500 Chevy truck and we chatted about trucks a bit. I then mentioned about the trouble with my interior parts (the trucks not mine). Then he AND his wife said that "Dodge has been and is experimenting with biodegradable plastics to help with landfill problem and the parts were not ready for prime time" I don't know if this info is true or not but it makes sense.

Tight Lines... Richard

When you put the new ones on, use generous amounts of ArmorAll weeklyand it should last longer...

Are the pieces from geno's a REPLACEMENT or a cover? I do not want a cover...

I have been using 303 protectant and have had a dash cover on mine since new. 7 years and still looks new in Arizona. Hope I do not jinx myself. Back in the 70's Chrysler had a service bulletin not to use Armorall as it dried out the vinyl/plastic. I started using food grade silicone after that on the 70 roadrunner vinyl top and then switched to 303 when it came out. The roadrunner still has the original top. I still do not use Armorall on anything although I was given a bottle of it and used it on my plastic wheel well liners. :D

I noticed that a few new threads have been posted lately on the 2nd Gen dash cracking again. The poll in this thread has had only 32 owners fill out the poll with cracks and 15 owners responded in the text post with no cracks, since that option couldn't be selected.

According to the poll Gary - K7GLD posted on 4-16-2006 asking how many 24 valve truck owners there were, he recieved 242 owners. https://www.turbodieselregister.com/forums/showthread.php?t=156377

Keep in mind that 2gen runs back to 1994 12 valves for the dash poll.

If you have a 2gen that has had a cracked dash and something has been done about it, by you or someone else. Please participate in the poll https://www.turbodieselregister.com/forums/showthread.php?t=155405&highlight=cracked+dash
