Hey folks, pulled the transmission and transfer case to address a "minor leak" I thought was coming from between the transmission and adapter. Come to find out, the transmission case is cracked through, starting at the top and running down 6-7"!!! After pulling the cover, I discovered it had been (very poorly) welded up previously. So the question is, should I attempt to re-repair this crack? I have found a replacement case for $350 at drivetrainparts.com , but I figure I can run a lot of rod for that much $$, just don't know if it's worth messing with. My buddy is a welder, and I have seen him make some amazing repairs in cast iron... Has anyone had a good experience with a repaired case? Anyone have a good 4x4 case to sell for reasonable price?? Any help is very appreciated!

OK, update... I completely dissasembled the transmission, and both the front and rear countershaft bearings show evidence of spinning in case bores. also, the shims against the transfer case adapter are quite galled up, leading me to believe there was not enough preload when this was assembled last. so, I think I'm just going to try to find another case. Do the 2WD and 4WD cases interchange? I'd really like to find just a case, as all the internals look really good, with only minor wear on synchros. If i can find a good case, and throw new bearings in, i'd be a happy camper. Any help is appreciated!!

Sorry bout that, it doesn't sound good finding out that your case is cracked. To answer your question, yes the 2x4 and 4x4 cases are the same.
