Cracked radio button = new stereo???

I have 33K miles on the truck and decided to get it in for some warranty items. One was a cracked plastic button on the fade control of the stereo. I would just put it back on but eventually it fell off and was lost somewhere in the truck. Dealer called and said they are ordering a new stereo for replacement. I asked if they were going to take the button from the new stereo and put on mine and he said nope, they're replacing the whole thing!



I'm like, what? I don't get it. I'm sure there's some reasonable explanation, but a whole stereo for a $. 75 button? Go figure.

DMC is so weird about that stuff. When I worked at the dealer, you could order knobs for the earlier 01 and back but not the new style. Some times we needed knobs because they were stolen or lost in transit. The only way you can get them is to get an exchange radio from DMC.

What are you complaining about? That just means that your stereo will last 33,000 miles longer than it would have originally. Who wouldn't rather have a completely new part rather than just fixing the old one?



People gripe when DC doesn't do enough but then also when they do too much? That's what I don't get!

Not really complaining, just don't get replacing a perfectly good $300-$400 dollar stereo for such a simple part. Seems like this is an area that DC could save some $$$. You're right though, better off to go overboard than not doing enough.

Most of the time auto dealers will only swap radios out - they rarely fix them and rarely have the parts. So, you get a new radio!



Now, here's the bad news: most likely you'll get a rebuilt/refurbed radio, not new. I've never had a problem with a refurbed replacement, it's just that you don't think you're getting new when in fact you aren't.

I replaced the stock am/fm/cd with a orig equip am/fm/6 disc changer in dash off eBay that came out of the same year truck for $180.

I did what the dealer wanted $750 plus labor to do and it took all of 10 min of my time! Now I don't have to mess with c/d's while driving on long trips! I also didnt want the external changer under the seat. Im very happy! Oo.

Good move 2Gen3Gen. If it wasn't under warranty, I wouldn't replace it at all or replace it myself with an aftermarket. That's what I did on my '98 stocker when the volume button went haywire.
