i say it was too much torgue but i dont know what did it however i seem to have put a hairline fracture along the left side of my tail housing. this is an nv4500 5spd 4x4. the last few weeks its been puking fluid and i couldnt find the problem. i figured it was a seal so tonight i started tearing into it trying to get to the seals. well i had a good close look at the side that was leaking while i did this and i noticed a crack running diagonaly starting near the top and almost full forward and running almost all the way down and almost all the way back. now i know i need a new tail housing but what can i do to band aid it for a while. i was thinking jb weld inside and out. would it work? reason why is i need this truck daily. i put a 1000 miles a week on it. and 2 i cant afford to put a new housing right now(could barley afford the 100 dollars the dealership charged me for the seals i thought i would need) so im left w/ jb weld silicone or some other quick fix. whats the best thing i can do right now. i only really need it to hold for 6 weeks then i can take it offline for a couple of days but untill then i dont wanna be filling the darn thing everynight w/ gear oil. anyways any advice is welcome and thanks in advanced

I would try the JB Weld. It won't cost much to find out. Clean it up good, scarf out the crack a bit and give it a go. I have a friend that has an old tractor with a cracked transmission case. It has been JB welded for a long time and still holding.

If it doesn't work, you haven't lost much except the time.

Too much torque probably would nto break the tailstock unless you were drag racing ... . probably more of an impact fatigue crack from 4 wheeling or a loose motor mount or transmission mount or a bent driveline - worn out u-joint.

Makesure that the transmsision is in alignment with the centerline of the driveline. The loads should be rotational.

My 5th gear housing cracked too. The trans mount was shot, not sure if that contributed, but it could not have helped. Some, if not all of the cast iron housings are made in China and quality control is poor. The housings are not concentric and require machining. Qaud 4X4 has some good info.

redram you nailed the problem right on the head as i was diassembling i found that the u joint on the pinion was worn. there where no needle bearings in it just powder. i have done so drag race like starts so that didnt help but i know the u joint was the biggest condributor. also now that the housing is off i have found the damage to be too extensive to jb weld it cracked the mounting flange in 2 places and when i pulled it off that piece fell out completly so im now looking for a new housing. as well as a clutch i need to see whether or not i need a new fly wheel. will look when i pull the clutch. this project is getting pricy. im ordering a new clutch, housings, and starter contacts. already got the new u joint and will have that in too. and since im in there im gonna fix the fifth gear nut as well so at least its out of the way. transmission looks good over all no visvble wear form being low on oil so i think i dodged that bullet. anyways i am now looking for a new tail housing. i saw a link posted on this thread before i posted so ill check it out.
