Just discovered a cracked timing cover housing on my 1995. The aluminum part. Is this a common problem? I have 120,000 miles on the truck it seems a bit early to have a failure suchas this.

Sounds like the killer dowel pin problem. Check the "Killer dowel pin will kill no more" and "Dowel Pin Pictures threads.

It pushed the aluminum cover out just below the fan mount just as in the photos at Chattanooga.net. Crap I did not need this kind of problem now. Hope to have the cover off sometime on the 4th or the 5th. Cummins Northwest had the parts in stock and they are on the way.

I recommend getting a new o-ring for the injection pump to cover to prevent oil leaks down the outside of the gear cover. Our friendly five star folks mangaged to cut a new one when they re-installed the pump and had to do it a second time. Flat rate must have been stinky that time. #ad

, you would think Cummins would have thought this one through a little better. Well the dowel didnt go through the gears so that is good. #ad
It broke a small part of the timing cover and nothing else. I have at dissambled and ready for the new parts. I finally got to see the geartrain of the mighty 5. 9!? One small mistake in engeneering can cause so much damage. On the bright side at least it isnt a V8.

This is a warranty item if your truck is still under the 100k mile mark. I just went through the same thing. Good luck.

1998 RAM Cummins Diesel 2500 4x4 club cab/long bed, auto with 3. 54 rears. Horton electric fan clutch, fuel pump up 15%, K&N air filter, Kitty and muffler MIA. Rhino liner, Centerline comet III,s (16x8), Kelly 285/75/r16, Smittybuilt nerf bars, Lund bug shield, auxillary back up lights, Combo Pyro/egt gauge on a-pillar, Pioneer system w/ 12-disc changer, two amps and a pair of Rockford 10" under seat. Factory OEM fog lights.
 
No such luck the truck just turned 120,000 miles. I know that the engine warrenty says 100,000 but it is a design flaw? Oh well.

Yes, because the head fuel pump and camshaft all have to be removed the timing has to be readjusted. I am however going to do the southern fix. That is I am going to tap the block to hold the broken section in place and use JB weld to prevent oil leakage. The broken section on mine does not affect the structural integrity of the cover so instead of removing the head and camshaft I will (cheat). I intend to keep this truck for a lot more miles.

Don't think that just because the engine has less than 100,000 miles that it would be covered. Remember, the warranty says 100,000 miles OR 5 years! I was two months away from 5 yrs when I was told by a transmission place that I had a crack in the rear of my block. Thankfully, it turned out that the block wasn't cracked.

I was kinda thinking along those lines as well for folks who didn't have any gear damage, just oil leakage. Clean it, buff it, and JB weld it (though I prefer the "Fasweld" brand, myself).

I have to thank the engine gods for not destroying my crank or block. The killer dowil pin was sitting on top of the intermediate gear and rattling around. Of course I couldnt hear it over the noise of the 5. 9 The first indication I had was a LARGE oil spill at the front of the engine. The dowel had been on the gear long enough to round off the edges, however the gear shows no marks on it at all.
