2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Cracked wheel. arggh

Tire shop calls, I have a cracked wheel. No signs of impact or other damage.

I do not offroad or anything. used $200. Man. Like I could afford the $800 bill

for the tires. Beats the $455 and 1 month wait from the dealer.

Do you pull a 5th wheel or gooseneck trailer?Around here it is very common on farm pickups or anyone else pulling these trailers to crack aluminum rims by side loading them by turning very sharp while loaded heavy. Just a thought from what I have seen before. It is always the rear that cracks never saw a front crack.

I pull a 5th wheel, mabye 1k miles per year.

It was the inside where it cracked, edge down to the bead seat.

no telling with rotation which position it was in, or how long it's been cracked.

Mabye I should look at steel?

That is not the area I was talking about you must have had a fluke of a rim. the area that breaks is generally in the bolt patteren or center hub area. Did the tire go flat due to this or was it found while at tire shop?Could it have been damaged by tire machine while breaking bead?

The shop found it, but it was on the inside edge so the machine does not touch it there, to my knowlegde. It was under a weight, but the shop does not think the weight did it, no signs of impact or damage.

American Racing cast wheels.

My truck has survived thirty Baja trips(mostly moderate speeds and dirt roads) and had 1800 lbs. on its back for seven years now with American Racing's 16x8 cast aluminum rims on it. I paid at the time $135. 00 apiece for them. Knock on wood(or aluminum I guess) no problems to date. I check them thoroughly at Discount when they are rotated. I'd feel better with forged but cost is prohibitive.

Not too long ago I was at the local metal yard and there was a pickup with an overflowing bed full of aluminum rims. I asked the driver where they were from and he told me he was from a tire shop and that all the rims were takeoffs. Most of them were brand new but they just piled up until he had a load and then took them to the recycler. He got 25 bucks a rim for them. I don't know if this is true everywhere but you might want to call a few tire shops that specialize in aftermarket rims and ask if they have any around the shop for your truck, you might get a deal. Seemed a waste to melt them down but he said nobody wanted them.

Check ebay or other such sites. As mentioned you should be able to get an entire set (with caps and lugs) for $250-$300.



I have had 3 OEMs crack (156,000 miles). The most recent was this past spring. I was having trouble finding a single used rim localy so I bought a complete set on-line. Now I have spares for when the next one cracks.

Schlickenmeyer, where are you located? I have a set of Powerwagon chromed aluminum 05 take-offs that I think i am going to sell. They have BFG AT 285/75R17 on them (~1/2 tread). they would come with caps and lugs. Might be willing to seperate with them if the price is right, I just got a set of H2 Wheels and 35" tires so, these are going to sit in my garage anyway.

Definitely look around, I got a used rim for about $85. 00 with tax. Try an independent tire and wheel shop, they usually have used tires and wheels.

Yep, finally found 2 locally, one for 85 and for for 100. .

they were both in great shape. thinking of going back for the

other one just in case...
