It means loosening the lines that go to the injectors to bleed air out if you run out of fuel or something like that. You probably never have to do it unless you doing something major with your fuel system i. e. injectors, injector pump because the electric pump usually moves fuel without the truck cranking so it gets rid of most the air.

Just a note, be DARN careful!!!!!!!!! The fuel is at pressure when the truck is running and it can/will inject you with diesel fuel right through your skin! It can kill you!!! NEVER get close to the injector lines with the truck running, use tools to get in there.

Actually cracking the injector lines after running out of fuel is Very necessary when you run out of fuel. You are actually loosening the injector return lines. The fuel will not spray out of them violently, just loosen a few of them to where they are hand tight, and watch for the air bubbles. Once diesel starts to come out pretty steady, tighten them up and it should run.

I ran out of fuel at the entrance to a Chevron Station. Although I shut it down immediately, I had to nextel our diesel mechanic to come and try to fuel it up and get it started. He tried doing every thing, but the only thing that got it started was to loose # 6 injector line 'till it got rid of air' and finally it started. I then drove 15 feet to the pump and filled up.

Shortly afterward my lift pump failed and was replaced under warranty. Since, my lift pump gives me 5 psi at just key turn on, but 15 psi when running. ???

Truck runs great so I'll wait 'till something else happens.

RobbyRam deja vu

Ah RobbyRam, I see you found your way to the right thread this time! :D

(I poked some fun at you for posting this one on the DD2 thread)

Crack lines with Engine OFF

Another note Wolfgang about cracking lines, only do it when the engine isn't running. Which is likely the case when you are trying to get it started

I say this though incase you ever decide to troubleshoot a rough idle problem or something and attempt to isolate an uneven cylinder or miss and are temped to "crack" the lines when it is running.

Vaughn

Powder Extreme, there is only one return line out of the head on a 24V. It is on the back of the head behind the #6 injector line. The 6 lines into the side of the head are fuel under pressure when running, they are the supply lines. Even at idle the possibility is there for you to be injected with diesel fuel.
