Sometimes mine won't start but it cranks strong. I assume the fuel shut off solenoid is starting to fail. after cycling the key a few times, it lites right up. Is there a relay that is in the picture also? Is there a most likley problem causing this? I appreciate any info that anyone has.

jheath, on the firewall near the brake master cylinder you will see two relays. Looking from the driver's side, the nearer is the fuel shut-off solenoid relay, the far one is for the fuel heater. The picture is in the 1998 shop manual at page 14-110. Wiring colors and details are at 8W-30-26. Brown to the starter, red/black to the PDC (fuse 9), Red/violet to the solenoid, and black/tan to ground. The details may be different in your 94, of course. Nick.

I had a problem with my fuel shutoff solenoid recently on my '96. I found the rubber boot had deteriorated. A section of the boot was being pinched when the solenoid tried to operate. After removing the boot, it works like a new one. I may have to clean and lube this area from time-to-time, but now I know exactly where to look. I keep a short bungee cord handy to "manually" open the valve if needed. It's a weird feeling when you shut off your "ignition" switch and the truck keeps running until you open the hood and release the bungee.

When mine started to act up intermittently I took apart the relay. I found the contacts were corroded. I cleaned them up with a point file (a nail file will work). It has never given me any trouble since. I've been waiting for it to screw up again, and I'll just replace the relay this time, but my temp fix has been working well. Try it. It's free.
