For the people who have had the CPS goes out and you get the erratic tach, did you get any other code besides the 1693 in the odometer window???

I think mine is on the way out due to erratic tach, but the only code I have is a 1693. Is there one specific to the CPS alone???

Thanks

I didn't read the code numbers but the wording on the DRB scantool at Dodge said "CKP sensor blah blah"... . and the second code said "transfer pump out of range". Both were related to the CKP sensor. Mines a 99 so I dont have the odo. read capability. I just had those two.

Thanks for the info. About the same time my check engine light and tach started acting up, my fuel pressure gauge has been bouncing around too, at idle... .

Could be the problem for sure. I asked Dodge if this meant my lift pump was going out but they said it was a disruption in the communication between the PCM and lift pump... and was due to the CKP sensor. They must have been right. I was new to all this at the time so I was in no position to dispute this claim. My new CKP sensor solved both codes and neither showed up again.

I don’t like it when threads start with a problem and then they never end. You never know when, how, or if the problem ever got fixed. So here is the end of my problem.

I went to the Cummins dealer and asked for a Crank Position Sensor for a 2000 Dodge. The part number was 4002066 and the cost was $37. I installed it in the truck and since the starter had to come down, I found this a good time to install my new Larry B Super Contacts inside the starter. With 107,000 one side was almost gone.

I got everything back together started the truck. The tach that used to move around 50 rpm as idle is now rock steady. The fuel pressure was bouncing from 11-15 back and forth at idle is now steady at 14psi. After a few starts the check engine light went away.

Thanks for all the help here guys and remember part numbers, cost, and if/how the problem ever got fixed is a big help to others…

TPlasek, glad to see the problem could be solved for only $37. I think I should get some starter contacts too. Between my lift pump and CKP sensor, I've been able to make starter removal a 5 minute job. :)

I don't get your fuel pres statements. Do you fellers have a stock Chrashler electric fuel pres guage in your cluster?

I have put a simple mech guage on my fuel filter setup that I check ocasionally just for grins.
