Has anyone experienced a failure of the tone wheel. Recently experienced a failure of the Crank position sensor. Symptoms: Normal driving in town, tac dropped to zero and has stayed there, engine stumbled one time, then continued to run normally. Drove through town and parked. Would not restart. Towed to dealer and was told that the tone wheel would need to be replaced. Said he would need to pull the engine and remove the crank. I checked the maintenance manual and it indicates the tone wheel can be replaced by pulling the pan and one main bearing cap. Anyone had this experience. The truck has been removed from the dealer lot. Will take it to Cummins in the morning.

No, never knew anyone with a tone wheel change.

Did they even read your new sensor or maybe try another one? I'm not sure how they could tell you that the tone wheel is bad without seeing it

I think that you did a very smart thing by taking your truck out of there.

Make sure it isn't just the sensor. Either replace it, just to be sure or get an ohm meter and see if you can see through the two leads. I'm not sure what the reading should be, but my rear wheel speed sensor (same type of sensor) read 1900 Ohms. If it reads open, no ohms, then it is bad.

just talked to a cummins tech this morning that told me about a tone ring that came loose

he found it by accident

they tightened it and all is well

Got my truck back today and all is working fine again. I was very lucky. The tone wheel is a two piece ring which is attached to the crankshaft. The larger of the two pieces is held on with three bolts. When the cummins mechanic removed the pan, he found two of the three bolts in the bottom of the pan, the third bolt was only hand tight. No damage to the tone wheel, and there was no need to remove the crank from the engine as the Dodge mechanic insisted would need to happen. The bolts have been replaced, lock-tight and torqued down. Put it all back togher and everything ran like it was new.

Now I'm going back to Dodge to extract a bit of pain from the dealer. I probably won't get any monitory relief, but I am going to make life difficult for them.

I'm a bit poorer, but much happier now that the cummins is humming again.

sounds great

now

can u fix mine

I dont have a tone ring on the crank

in 02 they went to one sensor instead of both a crank sensor and cam sensor

its located just behind the injection pump and a real pain to get at

the ecm and that sensor is the only thing I havent replaced on my truck to get rid of my stststststsstudder

Agades, sorry, don't think I can help you with your "stststststsstudder. " When my tone wheel came loose it knocked off the end of the position sensor and the engine came to an immediate halt. No stststststudder, no nothing.

Good luck!
