Hello to all!

Well, the Crank shaft sensor went out on my brother's 98. 5. The problem is, can he make it home from Missouri to Ohio. The truck seems to run just fine. He has Tach, but Check engine light won't shut off. He took it to a dealer and this is what they told him. Anything on this would be very much apreciated!

Don't have it replaced by the stealer!!!

Have him do it himself! It is very easy to replace. Get the sensor from Cummins, not Dodge also.

He should be fine as long as the truck seems to run fine. Sometimes when the CPS goes bad, the truck won't run, or will run bad... . ;)

On my 2000 it is located on the lower left side of the engine behind the starter motor. Get the part at Cummins and screw out the old and screw in the new. Tell hem to do it in the Cummins parking lot so incase he has any problems his truck is in the right place :D

Go For It

My experience with the CPS is the truck will run, although not real well at times (can go into limp mode). You may find your tach will not read out. Sure you will have a check engine light, that's warning you of the CPS problem.

I would drive (if you have to) it as I am not aware of there being any further damage. Naturally it would be better to get it changed if possible. It just unscrews from the block I believe.

This is an easy fix,

just locate the Crankshaft position sensor between the #5 and #6 cylinder on the Engine block on the Drivers side (if I remember correctly),

and should have a wiring harness attachment connecting to it.

It should be secured with an allen screw (torque would be minimal), after screw is removed it should be easy to remove.

Hope this helps.

Hello to all!

I want to personally thank each and everyone of you who have responded! We really apreciate it!!!

It seems that he will be Ordering the part from Cummins in the morn and due to the good instructions you have given, he is confident that he can do this minor job with no problems. Again, Thanks to all!!!
