crankcase breather replacement

Does anybody know the timetable to replace crankcase breather element on top of valvecover? This is on my 2005 ram2500 5. 9 diesel

I think it was around 80,000 miles. I just backflushed mine with brake cleaner and found it to be very free flowing still, so re-used it.

Ah crap, I forgot all about the crank breather. I don't see it listed in the maintenance schedule...

In the shop where I work (WILD DIESEL PERFORMANCE) We have seen the front cover gasket blown out due to this filter being plugged/partialy plugged. This blown gasket allows the oil to run down the front case, making it look like the front bearing seal on the engine is leaking, which in most cases it isn't. I just changed mine out at just over 90K.

Is this easy to change? Does anyone have a diagram or instructions for changing it out?

Can anyone post a part number or source? I'd like to get it from Cummins directly, but can't find it in the online catalog.

Nevermind... Geno's has them. Man, they're really expensive!

By the way, I did check carefully through both the service manual and owner's manual and find no reference to a replacement interval. Part of me thought they were more of a separator than a filter (as blnray suggests).

I believe the latest cata log from Geno's has them and they say change at 69000 mile interval.

i just changed mine at 89K, took about ten minutes. 4 bolts on top cover over valve cover and then 2 bolts hold breather to valve cover and two breather tubes, real easy. cost me 75 dollars straight from dodge parts.

I washed mine out in a solvent tank when i did my injectors awhile back seemed to flow air pretty good but havent replace.

I would like to know this as well, as I cannot find one for an 06. The ones that Genos sell are for a 03-05, and 07. 5-09.

I just pulled my breather. As we've always speculated here, this is a separator, not a filter. At least, as far as I can determine there is no filtration inside - it's a simple vapor/oil separator.

The internal baffles present substantial flow area, and to clog this thing up I suspect one would have to go many tens of thousands of miles without an oil change, which might, over time, fill it with sludge.

I understand now why there is no specified replacement interval, and it looks to me like a lifetime part except in special circumstances.

Anyone who has replaced it care to cut it open and post photos?

Thanks for the note, I've been following this thread... other than having the valve covers off at 100K to adjust the valves or I should say check the valves we've done nothing to the engine except for oil changes...

I'm sitting back here reading this thread and wondering how we've missed this...

The next time we have a truck in for a oil change we're going to look. .

The only problem we've had attached to the engine is broken exhaust manifold bolts and the replacement of the manifolds. .
