I just pulled my breather. As we've always speculated here, this is a separator, not a filter. At least, as far as I can determine there is no filtration inside - it's a simple vapor/oil separator.
The internal baffles present substantial flow area, and to clog this thing up I suspect one would have to go many tens of thousands of miles without an oil change, which might, over time, fill it with sludge.
I understand now why there is no specified replacement interval, and it looks to me like a lifetime part except in special circumstances.
Anyone who has replaced it care to cut it open and post photos?
