I just picked up the truck a week ago and it was a fleet, I got most of the service records and everything looked good but never saw a crank case vent filter and the overhead had the service required see dealer msg (I already reset it thanks TDR)
So I ordered one and changed it today. The truck had not been started in two days and when i removed the filter oil was dripping out of it.
Is this common? the truck has 160K on it.
Thanks!

That filter has a design life of 67500 miles...........make sure you clean your egr system too

planning on cleaning it next just was not sure if it was normal to have oil in the filter. I know on gas motors when the PVC is not changed out regularly they can get clogged with oil it can act the same way. (new to diesels)

Yes it is normal. it is an oil vapor trap. It captures the oil vapors and when enough is accumulated it it begins to drip back out and returns to the engine. On my old 5.9L there was a little bottle external to the engine block that had a tiny filter of sorts in it and the drips were collected in a bottle that we emptied as needed. The 6.7L eliminated the external bottle and enclosed the vapor recovery system into the filter that you asked about and returns the oil to the engine. Different oils off gas more than others and the harder you work the engine i.e the hotter the oil gets, the more vapors are produced. The synthetic oil I use off gasses very little so when I changed my filter I had almost no oil accumulation in the filter membrane. Hope that helps a bit.
