Hey guys,

I had replaced my VP44 and mine still had hard starts after she was warmed up. It would actully die when I'd shift into drive to take off. What I finally figured out was that it doesn't like ULSD fuel.

I've been running #1 (same as home heating oil) and NO problems at all. I even added Stanadyne to the ULSD and it didn't help. I think the sulphur in the #1 is keeping the VP44 lubed up enough.

I've driven it about 2000 miles with #1 and haven't seen any drop in fuel mileage (hand calc. 18-20mpg) or less performance.

Hope this helps.

In Washington State home heating oil is #2 diesel, maybe in Alaska it is different. Most places in the NW now only have ULSD and it is being delivered to Marina's, service stations and homes. It gets died for off road use. SNOKING

Finally found the problem. Crankshaft position sensor would not give a signal during start attempt, therefore the ECM would not turn on the VP-44. With no signal during crank, no codes were set because the ECM didn't know the engine was turning. Had taken it to Cummins Mid-South and they didn't have a clue and lightened my pocket book by $225 for nothing. Therefore I looked at the wiring diagrams and description in the repair manual and went straight to the sensor. $35 later it starts great.

jdross440,

Did your truck start faster when the engine was cooler and crank longer when hot until you replaced the Crankshaft Position Sensor?

Did you measure the signal to verify the CPS signal wasn't making it to the VP44, or did you use the wiring diagram and manual to determine the most likely component and decide to change it that way?

Please also see my hard start / long start issue at https://www.turbodieselregister.com.../213323-hard-start-long-start-slow-start.html if you have any other suggestions.

Thanks

I used the manual and wiring diagrams. The cam sensor had been replaced under warranty a few years ago. I was getting power to injection pump, but fuel wasn't turning on. It gets it's signal from the crank sensor through the ECM.

It wouldn't start cold, but if you heated the sensor, most of the time it would start and run good until it got cold again.

Try running some out board oil in your fuel TC-W3 1oz per gal. This will help lube the pump and the valves. The low 15part fuel does not have much lube.
