My buddys 99 2500 will crank without the key in the switch. Has anyone else ran into this problem. How much money and trouble to replace ?

You are able to turn the ignition switch without the key inserted? If that is the case, the locking mechanism is evidently bad. The cylinder can probably be replaced by a competent diy person, if the switch is bad, you need tamper proof torx bit to remove. Yes, It turns without the key in, Guess i will have to invest in some tamper proof torx sockets. I'm sure i will have to fix it for him.

You can get the tamper proof torx at harbor freight.
