I plan on tabbing my KDP this weekend. I have been getting all the materials together I need and going through the process in my mind. Just one question. Are these like gas motors and need a dampener removal tool? I have never heard anyone mention it on here before.

If I do need one, will a standard one work?

I could do this by trial and error but I'd just as soon learn from others' errors If I could.

Steve,

Nope, you don't need a puller. Just remove the bolts and it drops off. I didn't need to hold the engine from spinning taking it off or putting it on. Check to make sure it is in good shape. Check for play and the conditon of the rubber ring. It's a 2 piece damper. You will see what I mean.

dampner

When i went to take my dampner off i removed the four bolts that hold it on and got a pry bar behind each of the dampner and being very gentle moved it back and forth a little bit and it came loose very easily. You will feel releaved when you get the pin blocked, so it can't do any damage to the timing gear case!!Oo. Oo. :D :D

Check the condition of the rubber on the dampener VERY carefully. I had a 5. 9-equipped motorhome in the shop a few months ago that had a deteriorating dampener. Bad part is, we didn't notice it until it separated during a test drive. The outer part came off the rubber, and went right into the fan. This normally wouldn't be too bad, but rear-engine motorhomes use a direct drive fan--no clutch. To give you an idea of what happened, rev your engine to 2500 RPM with the fan clutch engaged, and throw a steel disc into it. Needless to say, we had to replace the belt, balancer, and fan on this rig. Tow bills for a 36-foot motorhome are not cheap!!!

Thanks guys!

When looking in issue 33 it looked like it was bolted on, but just wanted to check.

I know what you mean about peace of mind. This could be one of those trucks that goes half a million miles without problems. But if I want to gamble I'll go to Vegas.
