Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Crankshaft position sensor

So my check engine light is on & the code reader says I need a new crank position sensor. I just ordered one from the local Cummins dealer but it is going to be a few days. The truck runs just fine & there are none of the symptoms of a bad sensor. And I have to go out of town this weekend, 600 mile round trip. If the truck is currently running fine how much time do I have before I absolutely need to replace that sensor? Or should I not drive it too much.

From what I understand, it controls the fuel injection timing. It might be fine for your trip or it might put you on foot..... I paid too much for mine ($80) from the dealer, but Cummins NW didn't have one on hand & I didn't want to chance it by driving it without changing it on my daily commute (80 miles round trip)...

If I'm wrong on exactly what the CPS does I'm sure someone will correct me.

I paid very close attention to it yesterday & did notice a very slight stumble at idle. Then it cleared up & the check engine light went off. Hmmmm...

I guess I'll replace it as soon as I get the part.

when mine (2 now) have gone bad, they seem to get progressively worse. 1st they throw a code/light that's intermittant, then the tach starts dropping out, then a stumble, then... . you might be walkin home.

Have a '99 doing the exact same thing. Also a P0336 code, CPS. Will be replacing it tomorrow. BTW, it is a customer's truck. Mine is 12 valve.
