Bought the KDP kit from TST (c/s seal, seal driver, c/s seal starter and dust shield) and started on the repair today. Followed the directions (when all else fails!) and was doing fine until the installation of the C/S seal. I installed the C/S seal with great difficultly even though I have done similar ones before.

And then there is the dust shield & C/S seal starter that came with the kit. I looked at my old C/S seal and there was no dust shield. Is this a upgrade? Where does the dust shield go? Inside the cover or outside the cover? Now for the "seal starter", one way it fits over the C/S but if you install the cover will you be able to remove it once a couple of bolts have been started? The other way, it does not fit over the C/S but allows the seal to line up. The directions do not cover this.

Any and all suggestions would the appreciated as my truck is now dead in the driveway.

Thanks,

I used my drill press to press the seal into the cover and it worked great. After I finished I looked up the procedure in the shop manual and it said install the seal from the rear instead of the front if the cover is off, that would make it easier. If I remember correctly the install sleeve goes in big end first and it will pull through the seal ok when done.

Thanks Deezul 1

Good idea about the drill press. I didn't even think of that and I have one just setting in the garage. {think outside the box}

But what about the 'dust shield'? Did your kit have one?

Dust seal goes on the outside. Wipe a little oil on the ID and slide it up against the other seal. It will protect the other seal/shaft contact area a bit.

On The Road Again

Truck is back on the road again. :D

I called TST and found out that the extra seal comes with all the kits and some of the industrial engines use the extra seal. You can use it or not. (I used it. )

The directions that come with the kit are very good but did not include any info on the extra seal or the correct way to use the seal starter.

If anyone is going to do the TST fix-it way, I would suggest that you follow their instructions but also do the following: (keeping in mind that my truck is a 95)

1. Drain and remove w/w bottle.

2. Drain some coolant from radiator.

3. Remove top radiator hose.

4. Tie +cables out of way.

5. Make some kind of shelve to stand on especially if you have a grill guard as I do. I used 2 ea. 6 x 16 blocks and put 2- 2 1/2"x 8"x 6' boards across them.

By doing the above steps you can remove/install the fan assy/fan shroud much easier, even by yourself.

I also use two pieces of cardboard, instead of one and taped them together. Time taken to do the entire job was way more than two hours but I stopped and cleaned all parts before I even considered reassembly.

KDP was sticking out about 1/8+, and my truck has 109K.
