Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Crankshaft Seal

What is the best way to replace the crank seal? I have done it once- thats why it needs replaced. I did it with the radiator,a/c condenser, intercooler still in, so I could not get a good angle to get the seal all the way on the crank, hence the need to replace it again. I'm also going to make sure everything in the gear case is still tight. I'm hoping there is a trick so everything does not have to come out! Thanks!

Pull the upper rad hose,fan,fan hub and the shroud. Remove the front cover and tab the KDP. Install the new seal in the cover useing a arbor press. Reasemble front cover with a new gasket and use the seal guide over the nose of the crank. Good Luck!!

I just pulled the fan. fansupport,belt, and oil fill tube, and also the dampner pulley. Then removed the cover and installed the seal into the cover when it was out. When reinstalling the cover clean all oil off of the crank, use the seal guide to start it onto the crank. Then make sure you use the alingnment\installment tool while you tighten down the cover bolts.

DO NOT use any oil on the sealing surfaces while installing or it will leak.

Definitley install it while the cover is off. I did one after I put the cover on and it was a royal PITA.

Don't follow the Cummins instruction to replace the seal with the gear housing cover on the engine, this is the most difficult in my opinion.



Follow the directions others have provided, set the speed sensor to . 050 (not over the slots in the vibration dampner), torq the bolts to 18 ft lbs and drive the old seal out of the cover from the back side once its off the engine and reinstall it from the rear as well.



Set the seal to a different depth than the original so the wear mark doesn't tear up the new seal. A wear sleeve and larger seal is available if the groove in the crank is not serviceable by shifting the seal in the cover.
