Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) crankshaft sensor warrenty?

i have a 99 with 80000miles. . has anyone had the crankshaft sensor covered under warrenty. . waitung 2 days a dealer so far. . thanks

It is part of the engine and should be covered under the 5 year 100K mile warranty. Look at your warranty book it should be listed.

I have a 99 with 80,000 miles. 5000 miles ago I was told by Dodge and the Cummins service center it was not covered. It was not considered an internal engine part was the line used. It cost me around $50 for the part and 1/2 hour to put it in. The only thing it really caused was a bouncy tach and the Check engine light to come on. Otherwise it didn't make a difference in how it ran. Your dealer may do better for you. Seems to me like its a Cummins part on a Cummins engine and should have been covered. What was I thinking ?

just got it back

just got the 99 back from the dealer... not covered by warrrenty and they charged me 2 hrs labor... how can i find out what the labor time is for this job... replacing crank sensor

Remove Starter - 15 minutes

Unplug old Sensor - 5 seconds

Remove Sensor - 1 minute

Reinstall New - 1 minute

Reinstall new starter - 15 minutes

Lay on creeper while staring up at the truck looking for any leaks or other problems - 10 minutes



Mine took under an hour as you can see. I really cant see why it would take two hours unless you first had to read the entire section of the manual that covers this work... twice.

Did you look it up in your trucks warranty book to see if it was covered?

I just looked up the labor 'book' time on the All Data we have here in our dealership. It says crankshaft sensor replacement is 0. 7

That's seven-tenths of an hour! If the shop labor rate is about $90 bucks an hour then that's about $62-65 bucks for replacement. But don't forget that most shops charge an hour right off the bat just to diagnose the problem. So all together, they're off about 0. 3 in overcharging you for the job.



Cummins sells the sensor for $37 bucks, I did mine on my 1/2hr lunch break.
