Crap Software

Thanks, TDR Staff

Hello out their

I just spent several minutes writing a post consisting of several short paragraphs. When I hit send I got the standard "TDR is not responding" message. I could not cut and paste or copy the message I had written. I had no choice but to exit the website.

It then took several minutes and a couple dozen new attempts to open or refresh then open the website.

I frequent a motorcycle forum and two VW TDI forums using similar layout and features. I do not experience these problems with those websites or any other.

Something is wrong with the TDR forum software. I am not a computer specialist and am not capable of understanding why but I do know the TDR site is hanging or shutting down for no apparent reason.

I've noticed the same thing. The TDR Forum seems to "go dead" for several minutes numerous times a day. When it does, any attempt to refresh pages or move around the forum just results in the browser sitting and grinding with nothing happening.

HB looking at the amount of post you do you know the odds are stacked against you . I think there are some Trojans in the server too as my Eset virus detector brings it up when I get into the forum

You have a point but my posts have been made over almost twelve years while the problems with TDR software only began a few months ago with the recent software change.

HBarlow are you using the "reply" link under the post/thread? I click on the "Go Advance" link further down. Don't seem to being having any problems with it. I'm using Broadband to go 3g/data card/mobile transmitter and reciever. I use to have some problems when I first started using it on the site (old software) but don't recall having any problems since new software.

Of coure you post more than I do.

I use the Go Advanced button. I complained to Steve about the software soon after it was activated because the edit button wouldn't work and he told me to use the Go Advanced button. It will work most of the time but never immediately following a post. If I exit TDR and reopen TDR and return to the thread where I want to edit a post it will work some of the time but I still have the major aggravation of the website not responding issue which occurs frequently.

Harvey, I have the same problem every day at 8:00 AM every morning & I believe a TDR guru said that they do something with the web site every day at that time. I am in Eastern Time Zone.

The server backs up every day at 8. 00am EST. But that only takes about 5 minutes from what I have seen. The issues that Harvey and others are mentioning are taking place at random times during the day. I check it frequently as the day goes on and many times Explorer will stall when trying to open the site or you will get in but the "view new posts" button simply will not respond. I use 3 different computers with each having it's own IP address in the course of the week to access this site and all 3 behave the same way so I have ruled out any issues on my end. The "edit post" feature has become a complete crapshoot in the last two weeks, the edit box will open but only shows a gray box with no text in it.

Mike.

Thanks, Mike. Your report is more persuasive than mine because you are using TDR via different computers. I tried telling Steve I was having problems like this several months ago but he told me it was on my end. I didn't believe it then but had no way to convince him.

vBulletin Software is pretty robust but it is power hungry. I've been on Adventure Rider (very large motorcycle site) since it's inception and they have had to upgrade hardware several times and continuously for the same reasons we're experiencing here. If I was to guess, the hardware is the issue. Purchasing hardware is expensive and doing so will cut into the profit margin to say nothing of the complexity of running parallel servers.

This is a common problem in the vBulletin community when your site becomes popular.

I too occasionally browse ADVRIDER website and also observed that it works very well. As you said, it is a very large and popular website which contains thousands of large digital photos and the number grows with each trip report posted. It doesn't bog down like the TDR site does.

I use IE on PC and laptop both seem to be handling the upgrades. On some of the forums the Smilies don't work.
Harvey try using the "back" arrow to go back to where you were.

Just took it' sweet time and page can not be displayed hit the back arrow then tried again. Went right away.

Bill,

I think I have tried that also but not absolutely certain. I'll try it tomorrow when it happens. The website gives me plenty of opportunities.

I several times have tried to do a "quick reply" - like now - and had the page hang when I try to post the reply - then if I hit post again, I end up with multiple duplicate posts - and then the system won't allow me to delete the extra ones - sorta frustrating... :(

I have been using my Toshiba laptop w/Windows 7 Home premium operating system. Until yesterday my browser of choice was Google Chrome, and had not experienced any of the problems or issues being voiced here.

Yesterday I opened Internet Explorer which was loaded on my laptop since new, I was tiring of all the adds popping up on chrome(websites I had visited), I exported all my favorites, changed my default browser in my email so it would print to IE instead of Google Chrome.

All was well until I came here to the TDR, what a cluster, could not arrow back if I made a mistake, had to move cursor with the mouse and click it numerous times to get it to populate. Cursor keeps disappearing, lost my response totally and had to start over, had to download ieSpell for corrections, with it came whitesmoke and several other programs I did not want and had to remove. First time I posted, then went to immediately edit my post was gone... going back to Chrome.

See what I mean...
