I have a friend that has a 06, 2500, QC, 4x4, 6-speed Dodge. He is having problems with his blinkers. Turns left on and right blinkers blink, turn right on and hazards blink. Also the radio works sometimes when he starts the truck and then the next time it will not come on. The wipers work at there own speed sometimes but most of the time they work the way they are suppose to. What is going on with this truck and where is the problem located? Don't know where to start? Any help would be much appreciated, his arm is getting wore out by giving the old motor cycle arm signals.

2006 Dodge Ram 3500 Turn Signal Switch Defect Investigations

Turn Signal Malfunction

NHTSA Action Number: PE08059 Recall Campaign Number: n/a

Manufacturer: Chrysler Group Llc

Date Opened: October 7, 2008 Date Closed: April 17, 2009

Component: Exterior Lighting:Turn Signal:Switch

Summary:

ODI has closed this investigation based on a review of the complaints, other field data and technical data submitted by chrysler to the agency. Chrysler reports that the multifunction switch is hard wired into the instrument cluster (ic) and the cluster decides which direction has been selected based on an electrical signal from the multifunction switch. The ic sends a signal to the vehicle's totally integrated power module (tipm) and the tipm responds by controlling the voltage and flash rate of the exterior turn signal lamps and the instrument panel indicator. Chrysler's testing found that improper levels of resistance within the multifunction switch may result in the ic selecting the wrong direction. Complainants say that when the turn signal is used, the vehicle may signal the opposite direction and that the problem is often intermittent. This would be evident from the turn indicator lamps on the instrument panel as well as the exterior turn signal lamps. Either right or left signals may be affected. Dealers are correcting this by replacing multifunction switches on the steering column. Neither ODI nor chrysler has received any report of a crash related to the subject condition. Chrysler will implement an extended warranty on the subject vehicle population. Notification to vehicle owners is to begin in may 2009. This action is consistent with that taken in other investigations involving turn signal failures at similar rates. Further use of agency resources does not appear to be warranted at this time. Accordingly this investigation is closed. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by NHTSA that a safety related defect does not exist. The agency will take further action if warranted by the circumstances.

Gotta be the smart switch. I had the factory one go out on my 06. Apparently, it's a fairly common issue. Not too expensive and easy to replace. You'll need a 90* screw driver.

Thanks for the response. What is the best way to get this switch out to repair or replace? My friend will probably try to tackle this on the weekend.

Thanks again, Brian

Remove the plastic trim shroud around the switch by removing the screws from the bottom. You then should be able to remove the two black screws I show in the repair procedure that hold the switch in. You may have to rotate the steering wheel a bit to get access to the two black screws. Disconnect the wiring and pull the switch sharply straight out toward the driver door.

I had the same issue however it wasn't the switch it was the harness leading to the switch some how melted and intermediate the bare wires would touch.

Did you have this problem with your 04? My signal lights don't work on the instrument cluster, but they work on the outside of the truck. I should check that harness as well.

yes it was on the 04 I had to buy a complete harness..... From what I understand it was problem in those years do to an alleged blower motor relay issue... . I'm not sure, My theory is the tilt wheel pulled the harness to tight and the terminals that connect to the multiswitch pulled away in turn creating a heat generating point until things melted. My symptoms were turn left signal on the right would light, same for the right side, blower motor intermediately would not work gauges going batty, even the radio not working
