I want one for Christmas!!

Fraud alert

Hi all, looking at my credit report today and I have several accounts that have not been used in a long time. I have called these creditors and they no longer have a file on me. I asked them to update my credit report to reflect that the account is closed and they are unable to do so because the account is so old they no longer have the file.

What can I do to correct this?

Thanks

Brian

They will not necessarily 'fall off' in 7 years of inactivity.

I go through this activity every two years (should do every 6 months) and there are accounts that will appear on one report that do not appear on the other - Trans Union vs. Experian.

You can write the reporting agency and they will make the necessary contacts to get the items cleaned up. Trans Union supplies a form with the report that allows you to 'dispute' any record.

In reading my report, there were items that were going to be reported for up to 10 years that had been closed already for 2 years and had a $0 balance.

Me, too Jumbo Jet. When I got out of the Navy and moved back to Georgia and went through the process of buying my first house, I found out that not paying on a $0 balance is bad credit. Fortunately, the bank understood when they looked at the credit report. If an account is inactive, it should be closed. If the company is reporting to the credit bureau, then you should write them a letter and a letter to the bureau explaining the problem. The letter of explanation is supposed to become part of your file.
