I went to the Ford, GMC, and Dodge dealers and got some brochures and measurements to compare the 2002 "1 ton Crew Cab" and 2002 "1/2 ton Quad Cab" options. Measurements are listed in the order Ford, GM, Dodge.

Wheel base: F 172. 4, GM 167. 0, D 160. 5. The 2001 Dodge Quad Cab used to be 154. 6 inches.

Front door: F 50. 5, GM 47. 75, D 46.

Rear door: F 35. 25, GM 37. 0, D 33. 5.

Both doors: F 85. 75, GM 84. 75, D 79. 5.

Dash face to rear seat back: F 68, GM 64, D 61.

The brochures gave cab dimensions and volumes for the Ford and Dodge (the GMC brochure I picked up did not have cab interior dimensions or volumes).

. Ford Dodge

Front head room 41. 4 41. 8

Front leg room 40. 7 41. 0

Front shoulder room 68. 0 67. 0

Front hip room 67. 4 65. 1

Front volume cu ft 66. 3 65. 0

Rear head room 41. 0 40. 0

Rear leg room 41. 3 36. 4

Rear shoulder room 68. 0 66. 7

Rear hip room 67. 3 64. 6

Rear volume cu ft 66. 6 56. 1

Total volume cu ft 132. 9 121. 1

I also noticed that the rear seat back was closer to vertical in the Dodge than the GMC or Ford. This gains leg room at the expense of seating comfort. I thought the rear seats in the delux GMC I sat in were very comfortable with lumbar support and 18 degree inclined seat back.

Both Ford and GM are offering 3 cab designs 1) Regular Cab, 2) Super/Extended Cab, and 3) Crew Cab. Dodge has chosen to offer 2 cab designs 1) Regular Cab and 2) Quad Cab. The Dodge Quad Cab is positioned in size between the Super/Extended Cab and the Crew Cab of Ford and GM. The Dodge Quad Cab compares very favorably in competition with the Super/Extended Cabs. Maybe this will help Dodge get additional market share in the 1/2 ton market.

But the Quad Cab comes in 3rd in comparison with the Ford and GM Crew cabs. Dodge stretched the Quad Cab wheelbase from 154. 6 inches to 160. 5 inches for the 3rd Generation. Too bad they didn't stretch it to 167 inches of the GM product. The extra 6. 5 inches in the Dodge cab would have made a real Crew Cab.

All those, with the exception of the side-to-side dimensions are probably well bigger than my Power Wagon.

Must have been that market research said people preferred the shorter wheelbase to a huge back seat area. I don't agree with that idea, however.
