I have a 96 CTD, it sounds like a cricket is in the engine when it is running. I think that this is maybe the idler pully, or maybe one of the belt driven devices. Anyone had a simular problem? Any help would be greatly appreciatedMonroefiredog1@aol.com

My truck did the same thing when you started it then afted it warmed up a bit it went away. When I put the tab on my KDP I also replaced the orig. water pump afted that the squeak went away. Im guessing it was the water pump though it didnt seem bad once I got it off, it had 174k miles on it so you know wile your in there.

Sometimes a wooden dowell rod, placed between your ear and the suspect part can isolate the source. Kind of a poor man's stethescope.

My bet is the belt tensioner... . Take off the serpentine belt and check all your pulleys for deflection. Probably the tensioner tho.

good luck

It could be the belt tensioner pulley. My Alternator kind of squeeks when it's cold out.

practical solutions.com had a nice steel belt tensioner w/ replaceable bearing. I don't know if they are stilll around.
