I finally have a chance to sit down and type up a quick report on my recent trip, trailering my Jeep from Florida to Moab, Utah & back, attending the RMTDR dyno day in Castle Rock, CO, along the way. Even so, I'll have to apologize in advance for its length.
Total mileage on the Ram for the trip was 4721 miles, and 367. 23 gallons of fuel burned, for an overall average of 12. 86 MPG (compared to about 7 MPG last year for the same trip with my '98 V-10). High tank was 13. 7 (throwing out two anomalous data points) and low was 10. 7. GCW was 14,580 lbs. The first day's driving on the way out was with the EZ out of the system; the second day was with it on Level 4; the return trip was on level 6. Most driving was at 75 MPH, and the second day was all bucking a 20 MPH headwind across the Midwest.
Along the way, I stopped in at the RMTDR dyno day in Castle Rock (April 5th). What a great bunch-I really appreciate them putting up with a 'foreigner' at their event. The guys running the dyno seemed really knowledgeable, and understood very well what we were trying to accomplish with our trucks.
Results:
Stock -236 HP, 631 lbs-ft
EZ Level 4-295 HP, 760 lbs-ft
EZ Level 6-307 HP, 854 lbs-ft
Note the 631 lbs-ft stock-well above the advertised 555, and my numbers were replicated nearly identically by another stock '03 HO. Castle Rock is at 6,200 feet elevation, and they reported that that accounts for the difference from the ~275 HP that Keith achieves on stock '03 HOs in Las Vegas
I left the EZ on level 6 for the tow over I-70 to Utah. On the first big grade coming up out of Denver, I left the cruise control set on 75 MPH-no problem holding that speed. On the runs up to the Eisenhauer Tunnel and Vail Pass, I started out with the cruise on 65 MPH, then part way up, accelerated to 75 MPH-still no problem. Max boost was 28 psi, and max EGT was 1150*. On one of the (not quite as steep) grades near the Utah border, I tried to see how far I could push the EGTs. I started off rather slower, then put my foot on the floor and held it as long as I could. I was past 90 MPH and about to crest the hill when I finally backed out of it, and the EGT was just creeping by 1200*.
The Jacobs exhaust brake worked great on the grades as well-I could set the cruise control at 65 or 55 MPH going down the grades (I might have used 45 MPH coming down from the Eisenhauer Tunnel), and it held the downhill speed just fine. I got in the habit on the trip of using the exhaust brake when pulling off on exit ramps, and only needed the service brakes for the final stop.
Overall, I'm thrilled with the performance of the truck. I'll get to repeat this trip (at least as far as the Vail area) when I go back out to Leadville for the Mile-Hi Jeep Club's All-4-Fun Week in August. On that trip, I'll have the Jeep in my 5th-wheel instead of on the flatbed, and I expect the GCW to be in the 23,000 lb range.
