I finally have a chance to sit down and type up a quick report on my recent trip, trailering my Jeep from Florida to Moab, Utah & back, attending the RMTDR dyno day in Castle Rock, CO, along the way. Even so, I'll have to apologize in advance for its length.

Total mileage on the Ram for the trip was 4721 miles, and 367. 23 gallons of fuel burned, for an overall average of 12. 86 MPG (compared to about 7 MPG last year for the same trip with my '98 V-10). High tank was 13. 7 (throwing out two anomalous data points) and low was 10. 7. GCW was 14,580 lbs. The first day's driving on the way out was with the EZ out of the system; the second day was with it on Level 4; the return trip was on level 6. Most driving was at 75 MPH, and the second day was all bucking a 20 MPH headwind across the Midwest.

Along the way, I stopped in at the RMTDR dyno day in Castle Rock (April 5th). What a great bunch-I really appreciate them putting up with a 'foreigner' at their event. The guys running the dyno seemed really knowledgeable, and understood very well what we were trying to accomplish with our trucks.

Results:

Stock -236 HP, 631 lbs-ft

EZ Level 4-295 HP, 760 lbs-ft

EZ Level 6-307 HP, 854 lbs-ft

Note the 631 lbs-ft stock-well above the advertised 555, and my numbers were replicated nearly identically by another stock '03 HO. Castle Rock is at 6,200 feet elevation, and they reported that that accounts for the difference from the ~275 HP that Keith achieves on stock '03 HOs in Las Vegas

I left the EZ on level 6 for the tow over I-70 to Utah. On the first big grade coming up out of Denver, I left the cruise control set on 75 MPH-no problem holding that speed. On the runs up to the Eisenhauer Tunnel and Vail Pass, I started out with the cruise on 65 MPH, then part way up, accelerated to 75 MPH-still no problem. Max boost was 28 psi, and max EGT was 1150*. On one of the (not quite as steep) grades near the Utah border, I tried to see how far I could push the EGTs. I started off rather slower, then put my foot on the floor and held it as long as I could. I was past 90 MPH and about to crest the hill when I finally backed out of it, and the EGT was just creeping by 1200*.

The Jacobs exhaust brake worked great on the grades as well-I could set the cruise control at 65 or 55 MPH going down the grades (I might have used 45 MPH coming down from the Eisenhauer Tunnel), and it held the downhill speed just fine. I got in the habit on the trip of using the exhaust brake when pulling off on exit ramps, and only needed the service brakes for the final stop.

Overall, I'm thrilled with the performance of the truck. I'll get to repeat this trip (at least as far as the Vail area) when I go back out to Leadville for the Mile-Hi Jeep Club's All-4-Fun Week in August. On that trip, I'll have the Jeep in my 5th-wheel instead of on the flatbed, and I expect the GCW to be in the 23,000 lb range.

Great report mgonske. I don't think your mileage is much to complain about considering your weight and speed you cruised at.

Eisenhower tunnel is at what, 11,000 feet or so? I bet you passed a wheezing gasser or two :)

I was unable to get down there (I'm about 15 miles away) that weekend but really wanted to run my SO with the same settings you did. Did anyone run an SO? With an EZ? If so, do you remember any results?

That stock torque number is impressive!

I'm amazed at your stock torque  As I recall, it's not in line with what others have reported on other dynos. Any chance there was a calibration problem with the dyno?

Hmmm you got better milage then I did. But then I guess I was at about 20,000# GCVW and my truck probably sits up in the air a bunch higher then your Jeep :( I got around 7. 5 on the same route going from WI to CA, but I will bet that you didn't get the great thrill of hitting an ice storm in Vail at night, that was just great.....

I wonder if the EZ helped your milage much, I am waiting for the comp to come out, I did the pull bone stock.

I'm planning on taking mine down to Castle Rock tomorrow and run my SO 5-speed stock and levels 3 and 6 on the EZ. This will be an interesting comparison between the two at the same location.

I'm curious if yours didn't end up so high in torque at the stock setting because you'd towed your trailer that far. That would certainly give the computer time to set itself for that load. This is, of course, an off-the-wall guess but your torque numbers are quite high.

I believe you saw the numbers you state but I also think someones dyno is way, way off - especially at that altitude. I have also seen a good number of stock H. O. 's dyno'd (including mine) and 245 to 262 with about 455 to 466 lb ft was normal. These were taken very close to sea level.

Again, no insult intended but IMHO those numbers aren't possible especially at 6200ft in elevation.

I thought Barry Gallagher, who organized the RMTDR dyno day, was trying to collect results from as many people as possible and post them, but I didn't see them Wednesday in the regional events thread on the dyno day. I believe some of the participants had planned to also attend the dyno day in Ft Collins the following weekend, but I haven't had a chance to check that thread for results yet. If so, it would provide some valuable feedback on the dyno calibration.

Im mulling over going to BD to dyno tomorrow just to confirm what a ride in Rip's truck told me... whatever it is its not enough!

I'm curious mgonske, when you made the "stock" run, was the boost fooler installed? That would explain your great results.

The EZ itself was the only performance mod. I've been somewhat confused in the past by the term "boost fooler", hearing it used to describe some of the black box add-ons, and as necessary in conjunction with others (I don't think I understand all I know about this diesel performance stuff).

I did not install the boost elbow that came with the EZ, again because I don't really understand it's function, especially since Edge says the EZ will work equally well without it (why do they include it, then?).

I think I may have found another clue this morning. I was looking at the dyno data sheets, and noticed that they list the weight as 6500 lbs. My truck, empty but with full fuel, weighs 7880 lbs. For this test, the back of the truck was loaded with quite a bit of gear for the trip, and there was a driver in it, although the fuel was probably at less than a half tank. Isn't the weight used in calculating one or both of the performance numbers? Or would underestimating the weight throw the numbers off on the low side--maybe that, rather than the elevation, explains the 236HP number?

The weight doesn't effect the H. P. and torque numbers. Sometimes they do quarter mile runs on the dyno and weight would effect those results. The boost elbow keeps the wastegate in your turbo from dumping excess boost.

The fooler is different from the boost elbow . The fooler attaches to your IAT sensor and keeps the computer from realizing there's too much boost. I believe it comes with the EZ? Here's a pic of where it would be if I had one. (I have an aftermarket air filter but this should give you an idea). The fooler goes between the connector and the sensor. If yours doesnt look like this, then you have a fooler.

The EZ for the '03 comes with the boost elbow only. There was nothing else that came with mine. I got 22 lbs. of boost max before the boost elbow and have gotten up to 32 lbs. with the elbow. Normally, though it goes to about 28 lbs. WOT.

I did not get a chance last weekend nor will I this weekend. They are still going to honor the $20 TDR pricing so I think I'd better hurry before they change their minds!

Brian,

Be sure to let us know what you get. Also, are you going to go to the dyno day in Ft Collins if they ever reschedule it? I've asked Matt to make note of anyone who gets results from both dynos, so we can see a comparison.

That depends on the weekend. I was looking at the calendar yesterday and I've only got three free weekends all the way in to October. Training my dogs has taken all my time!
