My truck has been down for 6 weeks. I am a 100% disabled Vet and in a lot of pain and some of the time I haven't cared and pushed it, but I do have a dozen Texas Longhorns and do need to start hauling hay for the winter, here in Colorado, so I finally got in gear and pushed it.

I had taken my truck to an independent dealer. It ran rough and had low gas mileage, 17 vs. 20+. The Denver dealer said nothing was wrong as it popped no codes!! The independent dealer found a spliced main engine harness in the vicinity of #5 & #6 cylinder- they tell me you are not supposed to splice these. He also found the pig tail under the valve cover had bare wires to #5 & 6. Also,#6 injector was electrically fried.

However, changing the injector and harness did not fix the problem (the ECM was okay later per the dealer). The independent shop spent hours and could not find the problem. Patrick Maloney, a next town over TDR member said I should take it to the dealer as they could then go to the Cummins tech rep. So did another performance shop.

The dealer found low compression, 25 psi, in #6. He pulled the head to see if the cylinders were scoured but they were fine. He noticed, as did the Denver dealer earlier, that the #6 cross over tube had boogered up threads. Looking into the hole in the head, the hole and threads were badly damaged.

To go further back in time. The first work was done by a local dealer, not the one it is at now, as it got to where it wouldn't start. This dealer changed 3 injectors (don't know why not 6?). When I had more poblems and took it to the Denver dealer where I bought it, they noted the boogered up cross over threads on #6, and dressed them up with jewler's files.

The fuel cross over tube has a couple balls on it about the size of BBs. The corresponding hole in the head, also has a notch for the balls to be alligned with, I think for proper alignment with the injector. It appears that the 1st local dealer beat the cross over fuel tube into the head, damaging the threads and hole so that the cylinder won't get good, consistent compression. This won't pop a code, however. Codes do not preclude using common sense in further trouble shooting.

The head came in today and hopefully within 48 hours I will be back on the road. So, put that in the file of bizarre things. Thankfully, I did buy the extended warranty and they say this will be covered. So, per the extended warranty, 9 injectors, one CP3 pump (which was probably not bad but the injectors fault), and one head. I got my money's worth. Pogo was right, 'we have met the enemy and his is us'.

Sorry this was long, but it was complicated and that's my nickel.

Its goes to prove its hard to find a good dealer and even harder to find a good mechanic. The dealer I frequent is great to me but only have 1 good mechanic.

This just goes to show you that not every dealer has a diesel "tech". Most just have a person or two who got a passing grade on a training DVD that Chrysler provides the dealer to meet warranty repair requirements. It's a shame, but the dealers are doing nothing to keep the good techs, they only care about profit and getting the next car in the shop. #@$%!
