I have an 01 2500 Manual 6 speed. This cruise control thing has been a pain for awhile, but now it is bad enough that I'm not able to really use the cruise at all. It started a couple of years ago on long trips. After having been on the road for hours it would just cut out. The engine would drop down to idle and I couldn't get the accelerator back unless I shut off the cruise. It really freaked me out the first couple of times. It throws the check engine light when it happens too. But the next morning when I start the truck the light is reset and no longer on. i had a couple of guys check for the problem, but because it was so intermittent they couldn't find it. Now it happens pretty much every time I use it, but only after the engine's warmed up. It doesn't act up right off. Anybody have an idea what could be the cause?

Without a drb to see inputs and outputs you are going to be spinning your wheels .Too many possibilities to be a diy in my opinion.Multiple switches, servo, vacuum, pcm, clockspring.

sra1961, do you have the vacuum version cruise control or does it come out of the ECM like my 2002 manual does?

Do any gauges drop off line when it happens? Tach, voltmeter, anything controlled by the ECM or PCM? I know my 12 valve is a different setup, but the engine speed sensor will cause the cc to drop off line, either when getting close to failing or when one of the wires is shorting against the engine block (I've had both happen).
