Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Changing Heads

My cruise has always been alittle agressive in the dead of winter but usuallly starting acting normal with warmer weather. Not this year.

When I set it, it sets nice and soft but then very slowly keeps increaseing the speed very steadily until it gets 15 or so MPH over the set speed. Then it lets off real quick, holds a while, lets off over and over. I can set it at 60 mph and the let off and hold starts at 75 mph.

I set the cruise at a consitent speed and pedal position over a dozen times to clear any bad "memory" it might have had.

I have not limited the vacumn going to the servo yet.

I would not say my throttle is touchy but it needs very little pettle to maintain 70 mph.

Any suggestions on what to check, lube, replace?

That is EXACTLY the way mine started acting up, and a month or two later the "set" button was the same as WOT. It would just put the hammer down, tech at the dealership at the time was a good guy and said it was a common failure mode of the cruise control servo. He replaced my servo without a test drive, he just talked to me and it was a done deal, I left there with the truck and the cruise has worked since.

When you get the servo replaced you need to limit the vaccuum to the servo or it will be a PITA. Mine is reduced to the ID of a stripped 16ga wire insulation, and works great FINALLY. Once I started bombing the cruise sucked. Now it takes 10-15 seconds for the cruise to "catch" but it holds my speed exactly and does not over compensate.

jj, I fixed one that was playing similar tricks. Problem was the cable from the servo to throttle, it was frayed much like the pre-recall main throttle cable used to do. Don't remember exactly what it cost but wasn't too bad, way under $50.

Thanks for the help!!!

Some good things to check.

We had all the linkage off last fall doing the headgasket R & R. Things have been on the fritz since then.
