Was Cruise Control offered on the 1989 CTD trucks? I am looking over the parts catalog and don't see anything specific to the diesel. I am guessing it was not available until the later models with TPS.

I think it was available with the LE option. Mine does not have a TPS so that is not a factor. Only the automatics have a TPS.

Thanks rlyons, My logic wasn't all there in assuming the non TPS automatics might not have had Cruise Control available. Even though I know the std. trans doesn't have the TPS it never crossed my mind... The 1989 Chrysler part catalog does not show a cruise control assy for the diesel, and it is very specific in the differences of gas and diesel from what I have seen so far. Does anyone have a 1989-1991. 5 with factory Cruise Control? Anyone ever add an aftermarket CC? I would like to put one on if possible, I even have a complete set-up from a gasser parts truck and wonder if I already have what I would need? Any info appreciated.

Look in your Op Manual. The small booklet that's in your glove box... ... ... .....

It will tell you how it operates etc. It is mounted on the column (as opposed to the steering wheel hub) along with the wiper switch/delay etc. If I recall, it's part of the wiper switch knob/Hi-Beam switch.

The mount pad is there on the inside of the left fender well. It will he a slightly raised portion of the well with three holes forming a triangle. Look just ahead of and left of the heater grid relays.

I have a 90 cummins in a motorhome and it has an aftermarket add on. Needs a vacum pump to work. Appears to be same design that was on a gas powered motorhome I had. I'll look for the book. I imagine people here have the details.

My dad had cruise in his '89 w/auto trans, and I had cruise in my '90 w/manual trans. Looking through the sevice manual for the '91. 5 the differenc between the gas set up and the diesel setup is mainly how the system gets it signal throught the computer. Hardware seems to be the same.

Hope this helps

You lost me here Tom, computer?

Sorry, I call it a computer. In the book it's called the Single Board Engine Controller (SBEC). The wiring diagram shows that the signals for ON/OFF, SET, RESUME, BRAKE SENSE, VACUUM, and VENT. run through here. It looks like the whet is labeled as vacuun and vent are outputs to the servo and the rest are inputs.

I do need to correct one other thing. Going through the diagrams again, the diesel and gas systems are wired the same, only the adjustments for the throttle linkage are different. That being said if you get the components you "should" be able to just plug and play. The only other thing would be your vacuum source, mine is "T" off from the brake booster.

Does this make it clear as mud? If I had a scanner I would send the diagrams to you.

My 89 came with cruise, and when it was totaled, we swaped in into another 89 body and it works, sometimes a little tempermental, it seems that a good solid bump on the road will cause it to disengage.

years ago, I found a complete cruise control kit for the 91-93 trucks, I have it salted away to install on my crewcab truck.
