My '99 has been doing this same thing most of the time I have owned the truck. It started when still under warranty, and continues until this day. Several dealers replaced various parts, inc. cruise module and vacuum actuator, and it would appear to solve the problem each time. But a week or two later, sometimes a month or two, back to the same thing. Mine will go in cycles. It will work for a few days to a week, and then not work again for a month. I have checked the vacuum system for leaks, the connectors that I could find, and anything else that looked promising. It also will suddenly stop working at various times, when engaged, when it is working. It never sets any codes. If you find a solution, I would be very interested in knowing what you find. It is extremely irritating to be cruising along and then the unit quits. Not worth trading it in though, so I just live with it. :(

My '02 is literally at the dealer right now. When I turn the key, the cruise light comes on just as all the other guage lights do then goes out when the engine is started. When I go to hit the "on" button, nothing. It got worse as time went on, about 6 months ago it would turn on sometimes. When the cruise came on, it worked fine but most of the time it wouldn't even turn on. Now-Nothing. I started checking wires down through the steering column and I found a chaffed wired where the tilt column rubs the dash... I tried to fool around with a continuity tester but I'm not mechanic nor an electrician so I just reported what I found to the tech. The last dealer I took it to said they "couldn't duplicate" so that was a waste of time. They must have thought I was kidding when I said my cruise didn't work. Anyway, if they indeed fix it, I'll report back. I hate not having cruise.

When mine did that on my '99 the brake and ABS light was on as well. I changed the brake light switch for $15 and everything works fine now.

Well, to update this from last week; I picked up the truck and drove away. The cruise came on when I hit the switch but i could not set it. On my way home from work that night, I tried the cruise to set it and... nothing. I wiggled the tilt column up and down a few times while pressing the "on" switch and it came on briefly but wouldn't stay on. Anyway. No luck so far. There's a good post by a guy named Jake. It should be pretty current. He managed to track it down.
