Has anyone else had over speed problems with the cruise control? When you set it it will accelerate fast and go 8-10 mph over and finally level off until a hill then it takes off again, problem is worse in cold temperatures.

overshoot

I have the same problem when towing. Its better not to use it under heavy loads. My dealer told me the cruise control will overshoot when cold and not to use it until engine and trans are warm. Yours sounds like it might have to be reset. There is a proceedure to do this. I am at work right now so I don't have my manual on hand. I think you have to turn it on and off about 10 times. Anybody??

My 99 did the same thing. I had the stealer do a reflash of the ecm to fix. I believe there was a TSB about this problem. They corrected it and it worked great from then on. :)

I will try to reteach the module ,the odd thing is I always hold the pedal at desired speed until the cruise has taken over so how did it learn this condition?Maybe the unit is going bad,I guess I'll check the steller before the warranty runs out but any other ideas would be great. Thanks for the replies. Tim

Ramman:

Mine used to be very bad doing that . The first thing I did was go back to the dealer and was told the cruise work off a vacuum and did not work very well. Then I just started to experiment . I found that waiting till I was on level ground, flat highway seemed to works best. Then one day I had a throttle rod break. After I relaced it and made some adjustments all is well. No speed up, no jerk, no increase on hills, and it stays put when I tow the fiver. I have no idea what I did to correct it but it had something to do with the rod and it corresponding adjustments. I have a 94 4X4 gasser that works as smooth as silk. Now my 96 works almost as smooth.

Just wish I knew what I did. .

Mine will accelerate to 15-20mph over the setting before it gradually settles back to my initial setting. Sometimes it feels like it won't be coming back. Pretty scary. I will try this resetting and post the results:eek:

Mine overshoots when I set it even though I do it properly. Also, it overreacts constantly to everything and the speed and power control oscillates badly. Basically it acts like it has way too much HP for the cruise calibration, even though I only have DD2s and no box. So I'm not sure if there's a fix. I gave up using my cruise, I never use it anymore. If I switch on my Hi Idle box while driving, then engage the cruise, it works perfectly since the throttle effect is greatly reduced by the Hi-Idler engaged. But it trips the "check engine light" if I disengage then re-engage the cruise with the Hi-Idler on.

I talked to my buddy at the dealer and he had had good success using sinkers around the cable to take up the excess free play in the cable,I haven't tried it yet but he said it cured most of his trouble.

:D Find your self an adjustable needle valve and put in the vacuum line to the throttle module for the cruise. Close the needle all the way and then just crack it open a touch. The effect will be that your cruise will engage much slower (20 to 30 seconds) and should not over shoot. This works very well on engines that have hp mods. Since the throttle will respond slower is is more like driving with your foot. :D

I have posted on this subject before, and have read, and learned it is caused, at least on 12's, when you take your foot off the go pedal, then set the criuse, causing the speed control to search where abouts it was. You can easily reset this code, it takes time, but if you set the cruise, then turn off, turn back on, set cruise, turn off, 25 times. I know this sounds crazy, but you know what?? it works. mine used to shoot up about 10 mph over the speed I wanted to go, and now it is right dead on the money! Y'all 12's try this, and it may work for the over valved folks as well.

Well, I tried the on/off reset yesterday. It seemed like it worked until I shut the truck off to purchase a 12er of my favorite beverage. Got back on the hwy and was back to its same old trick. Set it at 60 and it took off to just shy of 80. :--) Once it got there it just dropped the throttle and coasted back to 60. I going to try resetting it once more. I'm not sure I paused long enough between on and offs.

I tried it again this time by using the on/off switch. I think I fixed it but I haven't been down the hwy but the one time. As soon as I get out there again I will post an update.

There are a couple of articles in the new TDR this week,I haven't tried the needle valve yet but will give it a try . Keep up the post and maybe we will get to the root of the problem. Tim
