Last night while on cruise control it suddenly disengaged as if I had hit the cancel button. I reset it and a few minutes later it disengaged again. Anyone else had this experience??

Brian,

The cruise on my 94 occasionally disengages and forgets the speed setting. It sometimes will not even accept a new speed setting and I have to turn it off, then back on, then set the speed again. This seems to happen in areas that have a microwave tower, airport, broadcasting antenna, military base, or other strong RF source. It has never dropped when I use my 50 watt 2m ham rig. I think a strong UHF or microwave signal causes my problem.

I have had similar problems - very intemittant, but it always fixed itself, leading me to believe in an intermittant electrical problem. However, during a trip to California in July it was more pronounced. I talked to a fellow Ram Diesel owner while staying at a hotel at Leguna. He was also from Colorado and had the same problem when he hit California coast. He said he contacted a transmission shop and was informed that it was a vaccum problem and that it would clear itslef up when he got back to altitude. My problem was erratic enough that I thought it might be a faulty brake switch, but decided not to replace it.

Sure enough, when I got back to altitude my erratic cruise control problem went away. (However, one would think that more vaccum would be available at sea level - unless living at high altitude helps reduce ambient differential pressure requirements - go figure. ) The service manual is not real clear on how the vaccum controls your speed for the diesel.

I am sure other folks can illuminate particulars on vaccum speed control for the deisel.

Loosing the cruise control can be irritating, but it always seem to fix itself.

Hope this helps

Mine is very touchy, if I touch the brake pedal softly with no intention of disconnecting mine will disconnect. My guess is that the brake pedal shakes/vibrates enough to cause the problem. Could be brake switch needs a little adjustment so the pedal clears the switch. Stephen in Sanger CA

mine is doing this and also wont work over 53mph, maybe the crank shaft sensor?

Could be electrical. Has anyone checked out vacuum reservoir to make sure its not leaking or check valve is good(in reservoir)?

I bought my truck in CA and never had a cruise problem until the other day, I live in North Dakota now. Last weekend took a trip to Bismarck, about 3 hours south. The cruise still worked but would engage slowly.
That is it would slow down about 10mph then climb back up. Very annoying but it went away when I got further north. I was releived because I have not taken to shop for anything in 4 years and now do not have too!
