I got to wondering the other day on my way to Lake Shasta, how hard would it really be to put cruise in this thing. My truck is an LE, but cruise is the only thing it doesn't have. Were these things pre-wired so all I need are the hard parts to plug in and bolt on? Anyone out there tried this?

My expirence from other dodges is usually they are pre-wired and all you should do is plugin the controlls.

I have not tried to convert one of our trucks.

That's pretty much what i thought. I am surprised there isn't more interest in this subject. I guess I'm the only one unlucky enough to get an LE without it.

I put an aftermarket one on and it didnt work worth a crap. The problem was as soon as you turned it on it would go like a raped ape and then it would let off, then back to a raped ape. If you looked at the exhaust it was smoke/no smoke/smoke /no smoke. I hope the factory ones wok better. I wonder how much they want for one?

I don't think the dealer offers a retrofit anymore, truck's too old. I guess I'll have to call my buddy that works in a dealers parts dept to see what he can dig up. I figured someone here would have run across this by now. I was just curious if I dug up enough parts, would they plug in and work.

if I dug up enough parts

I would think that if you dug up enough parts, you would CERTAINLY be able to add it on. I have cruise on the 92, 93 automatic, and 93 manual. The cruise function died on the 92 and 93 manual years ago. I suspect that the PCM is to blame on the 92 but don't know about the 93 manual. There were post in the old format about making the cruise work. I just never bothered. A local guy mentioned that his mechanic was in the process of restoring cruise on his truck. Don't know how that turned out.

And yes, the trucks are probable too old to get anything from the dealer. You might get a few repair parts. Salvage yards are probably your only source and you might be on a cold trail.

Hey 1stgen, have you looked at the TSBs regarding cruise control? Might be a place to start if you haven't. I'm not gonna hold my breath trying to find parts, at least for the engine end. All of these trucks are still on the road! Who knows, maybe I'll stumble onto something.
