MKaybe someone can help me with this so I don't have to take it to the dealer. I can turn on the cruise control but I can't turn it off. The only way to completely turn it off is to turn off the truck. Any ideas? TIA

I hope what you mean by this is that you can disengage it, but you can't turn the light off in the dash. It that's the case, you could just live with it, as it is just an indicator that the system is turned on, and ready to use. That being said, it sounds like you have a bad switch on the steering wheel (if that's where the switch is on a 1st gen). Someone who has more experience at getting to the switch, testing it, and possibly replacing it, will have to help you with that. Good luck... ;)

It will disengage with the brakes or key. It will not turn off except with the key. Makes it hard to reset speed for speed zone changes , etc. I would rather punch the switch to off than hit the brakes every time I want to turn off the cruise. Otherwise works as normal.

If it has a "coast" & "resume/accelerate" feature, you should be to adjust your speeds until you get it fixed.

Is it like the newer models where the On and Off are the same button or are they separate. If they are the same then it rules out a bad switch. Isn't there a Cancel button?

They are the same button. . I thought the same thing unless it is a rotary switch, which I don't know. I can punch it 20 times and it won't shut off, but once it will turn on. Yes I can accelerate, but when you want to change from 75 down to 60 it won't work with resume/accelerate.

You don't use Resume/Accelerate to set a lower speed.

Just hit the brakes to disengage, drop down to the lower speed and punch SET. It should reprogram to the desired speed.

Just being in an "ON" state should have no effect on being to reset to lower speeds, providing you use the SET button.

What you are describing is typical of older two function cruise controls. You can set them at speed each time, or you can accelerate to a new speed.

The resume feature is so clumsy to get to on my work truck, I just punch the SET button each time I want the cruise.

Well John, that's what you can do if it was all working properly, but he has a disengage problem (he didn't say if he could re-engage the cruise control without turning the key off). Yes, you can hit the brakes and slow down to another speed and re-engage the cruise control, if that feature works on his cruise control, but how do you suggest he speed up? Hit the brakes then accelerate, then re-engage the cruise control?

On the newer cruise control setups you can bump the "resume/accelerate" button and it will increase you speed by about 2 MPH, or you can hold the accelerate button down until you have the speed you want. You can do about the same thing with the "coast" button. It really isn't that difficult. Have fun... ;)

On mine I can have the cruise set at say 50 MPH. If I want to go to 60 then I just step on the gas untill I am at 60 and hit the set button again. No need to dis-engage to accelerate, just hit the gas and re-set.

My 99 to slow for construction zones I just depress the "coast" buton, (bottom of the Resume/Accelerate button). Release it when I've slowed about to the reduced speed posted and it resets to that speed. The Dodge cruise is less than perfect far as I'm concerned. My 96 F350 locked on and didn't vary at all. But that is about all I liked better bout the ford as a hauler. Most the time I'm locked in cruise, till I get to a city or get drowsy.

Cheers,

Steve J
