Is there a fuse for the cruise circuit ? The light doesn't come on when you push the on switch

There's no fuse in the speed control circuit.

The brake lamp switch might be a culprit to check...

Besides activating the brake lamps, it has a separate internal switch that provides power for the speed control circuit. You can verify it's working by checking for power at pin 4 of this switch when the brake pedal is NOT pressed.

I think that brake switch turns off the cruise control. You set it most of the time with the throttle pedal pushed not in the off position or at any speed without throttle. Chris

Yes, but it does this by interrupting a 12v DC power signal between the PCM and the speed control servo.

There are three separate switches inside the brake lamp switch unit.

Two of these switches are normally open. One is used for brake application sense by the PCM and the other is used for illuminating the rear brake lights.

The third switch is normally closed and is used to interrupt power between the PCM and speed control servo.

OK, the cruise indicator on is different that the cruise control on. Page 8J-18

Questions: Does the cruise indicator come on for 2 seconds during the cluster lamp test?

For further diagnosis of the cruise indicator or the instrument cluster circuitry that controls the indicator, (Refer to 8- ELECTRICAL/INSTRUMENT CLUSTER - DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING). For proper diagnosis of the speed control system, the PCM, and CCD data bus, or the message inputs to the instrument cluster that control the cruise indicator, a DRBIII scan tool is required.

Well if the cruise light does not come on during the lamp test it may not be the clock spring. The Clock Spring is in the steer wheel. I it is a flat wound ribbon cable that allows the buttons on the steer wheel to make electrical connection to the truck and still allow the wheel to turn. It winds and unwinds like a spring in a clock as the wheel is turned. SNOKING

It is essentially the device that allows electricity and signals to flow to the steering wheels various components(since the wheel turns around and around tough to use a wire in that case), switches and controls such as airbag, horn. cruise, radio controls

I just repaired the same problem on my '01. There were a cluster of ground wires that corroded right out of the connector located between the headlight and cruise control module under the driver's side battery. Caused some turn signal issues, too. I split them up with a few fresh terminals and reinstalled them on the stud. Hope yours is as easy as my fix.

When cc stopped working on my '01 (cruise light would not come on when button pushed - same condition as OP), I found a couple of broken wires in the steering column. DC did not allow proper movement of the wiring for tilt steering, and the small wires were constantly flexing every time the tilt steering was used. I live in a cold climate also, which makes it worse: I try not to use the tilt much until cab warms up now. One of those wires was for the cruise control: I connected the wires and problem solved. Take the plastic covers (upper and lower) off from around the steering wheel and inspect the wiring. There is a large bundle of wiring that was fine, but a smaller loom underneath the column with only a few wires was the problem on mine. Take a close look at it removing any tape or sheath as necessary. I recommend using some 'slippery' wire loom over the wiring that allows it to flex and slide freely. Mine was a litte sticky with tape on it which caused it to catch and pull as tilt was used. DC had some kind of foam tape padding at the bottom of the column over these wires too, which was a joke; sort of made it worse as you tilted the steering wheel.
