My truck did the same thing. You didnt say what year truck or trans, but here is the TSB:

All Improved speed control system sensitivity to set speed.

Some customers may complain that their vehicle speed control system may be too busy or drift more than 2 mph below or above the initial vehicle set speed. Vehicle load and road/terrain conditions may impact this issue. The new PCM software improves the speed control system sensitivity so that the vehicle speed remains closer to its set speed with fewer engine rpm oscillations. This bulletin involves selectively erasing and reprogramming the JTEC Powertrain Control Module (PCM) with new software (calibration changes 98Cal12A, 99Cal 17). There is no change to the Cummins CM551 Engine Control Module (ECM) software.

Mine does it for 10 minutes or whatnot when first engaged. Possibly worse in cold weather too. I just keep fighting it 'till it warms up and troubles soon go away. After that it is fine. Slight quirk.

My 98 did the same thing after 30,000 miles and I took it into the dealer and they replaced the cruise control module. The problem was gone. Now at 73,000 it has the same problem only when it is cold outside.

Set the cruise at 95 mph (or whatever redline is for your rig) and no worries of it going any faster! :p seriously mine takes off a bit as well when I hit the set button, I hit the coast a couple times to calm her down. Its the aggresive personality of our trucks! My wimpy old chevy used to slow down when I hit the set button. I like this way better.

Yep, mine does it too. It immediately jumps up 3-5 mph when first engaged. I 've had this with other vehicles and solve the problem by engaging the CC 5 mph under where I want to be and fine tunng with the "accel" and "coast" buttons.

My 98 did the same thing and I had the module replaced and after about 10 months it's started again.

If you turn on the cruise when you start the engine, most times it will be stable by the time you get on the freeway. Just one more item for the check list.

My 94 and first 97 were dead on, now this 97 is doing that, and has been since I got it.

If you do play with it, and it does settle down, you have about 10 miles until it just starts "blipping' the throttle. on-off-on-off-on-off-on-off-on-off-.

AAAAGGGGHHHHH!!!!

Anyone have a good line on new ones, I have about given up!

It seems to me from reading a lot of these posts that there are 2 different problems. One involves speeding up after setting and the other involves erratic operation (throttle on and off/speeding up and down). Mine speeds up 10-20 mph after setting. If I have enough room, it will speed up and then settle down to what I set it at without me doing anything. Usually, I have to keep hitting the decel/coast button and then the up button 'till I reach the speed I want. In the summer I don't have any problem at all. The colder it gets though, the faster/higher it accelerates. There were some posts regarding the erratic operation that said to hold your speed steady while setting and cancelling the cruise over and over again something like 10 times in a row fairly quickly. This was supposed to "reset" it. I've tried it and it didn't help at all with my problem.
