Anyone have this happen? Most of the time setting the cruise control it wants to keep going faster. After a few tries it will set and stay. It stays at the set speed when I resume cruise after toughing the brake. The resume/accelerate button works fine. My first thought is that the set button is messing with the accelerate. My second thought is that something is not right under the hood. Any suggestions? Truck has 310,000 miles on it. :eek:

The computer has a memory that you need to reset. The procedure is in the factory service manual, and has been posted a few times if you do a search. IIRC you need to set the cruise, then shut it off about 20 times. Once you get it working the key to prevent re-ocurance is to keep your foot on the pedal and hold the chosen speed for a few seconds. When you set the speed and immediately release the pedal the computer searches for the correct setting. Eventually it starts acting like yours is doing.

Thank you. I know someone out there had this happen before. If interested, and as a thank you gift, look up the column people pay me to write. Google Brad Nelson, Tales of a Hay Hauler (that's the name of the column in the Progressive Forage Grower magazine). Enjoy and thanks again.

GV no longer in service and is for sale.

I guess you finally found a driveshaft. How does it feel to only have 5 forward gears again?

Back to topic, I did a search and couldn't find the procedure, so thought I'd repost it. The procedure is in the manual in Chapter 8. The title of the paragraph is overshoot/undershoot on speed control set and listed in the index under speed control, not cruise control. For those without manuals, get one and read why the cruise develops the condition. In the mean time, to fix it, here are the instructions;

To "unlearn" the overshoot/undershoot condition, the vehicle operator has to press and release the set button while maintaining the desired set speed with the accelerator pedal (not decelerating or accelerating), and then turn the cruise control switch to the OFF position (or press the CANCEL button if equipped) after waiting 10 seconds. This procedure must be performed approximately 10-15 times to completely unlearn the overshoot/undershoot condition.

That is the book's way. On mine I had to do it several more times than 15. To reiterate, once it is fixed do not set the cruise and immediatley take your foot off the pedal or it will reoccur. Same goes for resuming you speed if it is set and you have applied the brakes. I try to only set mine when on fairly level highway, and manually turn it off when I am exiting the highway and plan on shutting off the engne.

For the search engine;

cruise memory

cruise control memory

reset cruise memory

Just took mine in and had it stretched back to original length. Almost used to just the five speed. Still feel for the GV switch at times.
