Any of you guys in colder climates experiance
this, when my truck is cold it will speed up right after setting the cruise by as much as 5-10 mph. This only happens when it is cold outside and the truck is cold once it warms up or if the outside temp. is warmer it will work fine. Temps are in the lower 30's here now.

Thanks for the help,

Paul

Hi Paul:
Mine has done that since new . I took it in when it was new for that and the mech. told me the deisel cruise does not work properly because of the heat exchange. It was explaned to me but what it seems to me is the air under the hood has to be warm before the cruise works. That may not be possible but I have not come up with anything that makes since anyhow.
I have a 94 360 gasser that works just perfect. That truck has 203,000 on it now and run like a top.
I know this does not help you any but this is my experence.
Good luck.

Sounds logical to me turbo thom. Some electronic gadgets do not work well below/above certain tempatures. I believe(not having one) that your speed servo is over by or next to the passenger side battery. When that battery starts charging(chemical reaction=heat) it should help warm up the speed servo along with the engine heat.

Does it every winter. I just set cruise 10 miles lower then desired and wait for it to settle, then adjust to desired speed.

I don't want to make anyone feel bad but I've got a 96 3500 5 sp. with 179,000 miles on it and haven't had any problems yet with the cruise (knock on wood). Until reciently I've averaged 40,000 miles a year in temps. from 100 plus to minus 20 and she always locks onto the speed I'm at. When I push the accel. control she immediatly picks up 2 more MPH. I've never had a cruise that works as good as this one. I hope I haven't jinksed it.

I remember reading somewhere that this event can occur during cold start up... researched my Haynes manual and owners manual but could not find it. There is a "vehicle speed sensor" located at the transmission that the engine relies on to regulate speed. Seems to me that as the engine is warming up and the cruise is set at a given speed, the engine starts running more efficiently (warm-up), and for some reason it takes the cruise control (speed sensor??) about two minutes to realize this. Could the sensor be defective or sensitive to cold??? My truck does it when it is cold... setting the Cruise at 45 MPH in OD usually bumps me up to between 52 and 55MPH... but after two or three minutes evenually settles back down... My truck is also missing the Fuel Heater Relay setup... maybe once dealer installs it (next week) the problem will disappear due to warmer fuel being introduced to the engine... again, just my two cents...

I'm with Gene,it's the best cruise control I've ever had, when I set it hot or cold it never varies more than 1/2 mph. I get much smoother AT shifts and faster acceleration by pushing the resume button repeatedly than by using my foot. I also found that I can get 300 more rpm out of my rig with the cruise vs the foot, but that may have been before I replaced a frayed throttle cable.

Correction book says it is on left side, under battery tray.
Conditions; Hunting surge, or speed variations at low speeds= torque converter, clutch roughness, amplification of engine surge, defective servo, defective cable, defective powertrian module.

Check all system components...
loose or corroded electrical connections, loose or leaking vacuum hoses or connections, secure attachments of both ends of the speed control servo cable, smooth operation of thriitle linkage andthrottle body air valve.

I have a 96 and from day 2 mine has at its will, didn't matter warm-cold-or just right when ever it gets the urge it will do what ever it wants. And has many times tryed to go flat to the floor. (can be fun on ice). the good news is i know it. The bad news is cant get it to do it on comand????
Might work fine for a week/month or hour?
Having worked on electronic controlled eng. systems (Big rigs) my guess it is in the electronic parts at least in my unit because with the use of on/of -set-resume-buttons i can over ride the the issue .
Example some times you can push, at the same time, set & coast to get it to take the set.
Won't turn on -Push and hold the on/of.
Can't turn off - do the same while hitting the coast& resume.
Now don't say replace the control pad --been there done that.
I would love to get my hands on an oscilloscope! Over 700k and still the same.

I had one in the shop where the cruise was very squirrelly, and I couldn't figure anything out with it, but I noticed he had some of the ground wires were a little beat up, so they were all redone and the places they attached to were all cleaned up. The problem never re-occurred. I'm not saying this is your problem, but it's good preventative maintenance anyway. #ad
