Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Cruising speed

What RPM is it "ok" to cruise at for long periods? How does cruise RPM affect a stock motor? I havent had the truck long enough to know these things.



At 80mph, I am ~2300RPM.

I've run 2700rpm for hours on end and no damage. It has been said that you can leave it against the governor all day long. 1800 to 2200rpm is suppose to yield the best mileage.

I read a Cummins article somewhere that said as far as they were concerned, you "drive it like you stole it".



As long as you keep it below red line, it will be fine.



As mentioned, when the RPMs start up above 2200 the MPG heads south in a hurry.



60 mph = 16. 0 mpg for me

95 mph = 9-10 mpg empty no tail gate

With 60k on the rig you're all broke in and ready to go. Cruise at any speed you like that doesn't result in too many tickets. Like the others have said though... the faster you go... the less the mileage.

your signature doesn't show your axle ratio. Has your truck always given good milage?



I would kill for some decent highway cruise figures at 20+ mpg. But 24? You are breaking my heart.



Don't let DC reprogram it for you. Keep it like it is.

John, maybe it's those 4. 10 gears torpedoing your milage. At a steady 60 mph on level roads I have frequently gotten 25 mpg. I do have the 3. 54 rear end.

Wish I could post mileage like that too. At a steady 70 on fairly level roads the best of gotten is 19. 7 hand calculated, empty with the tailgate down. And since I changed to Bridgestone Dueler Revos 265/75-16 I dropped about 1 mpg average around town!

Mileage

My mileage jumped from about 22mpg up to 24+ mpg after installing a tonneau cover. This is at 65mph. And the gearing on the rear is the 3. 54 something not the 4. 10.

Also using synthetic oil (Mobil Delvac) for whatever thats worth.
