My son's 88 Buick Century has crummy brakes. He has to push the pedal almost to the floor to get the car to stop at the end of a freeway off ramp. It is as if the brakes are too small for the size of the car.

Is there a type or brand of front brake pads (front disk, rear drum) that will stop better than the ones that are installed in the car?

Thanks for your help.

Something way wrong with those brakes, they should work just as good as any other car if they are in good shape. I have had several Buicks and the brakes were very good.

When I had my Grand National, the only thing I didnt like about it was the brakes. They were actually dangerous!! In rain or snow... forget about it!!
If the pads and shoes check out OK I'd try a brake proportioning valve. This may help equalize the brakes. ?? If it has ABS. . I dunno.

I'll add my two cents.

If all the other stuff checks out OK replace the brake fluid. I have been amazed at the improvement in braking with just some new fluid.

Also check the flex lines from the cylinders/calipers to the hardlines. They can become spongy with age and start to give when pressure is applied.

Don. t just start throwing parts at it till you have diagnosed the problem. You may need to do a hydralic pressure test to help tell where to start. Call me. 360/357-4958 during the work week between 8. 30---5. 30----Sam
