Anyone kmow of anything out west that may need hauled toward this area? Saw a bunch of 18 wheelers hauling FEMA trailers from the Reno area last weekend, but no one was answering thier CB. Leaving for OKC tomorrow and might be interested in doing this for a bit.

CTD was required...

I work for a company with heavy assets and personnel in the NOLA area, We had to get 6 generators, 2 icemakers, and 7 satelite phones down there ASAP. My company only has chevy gassers for company trucks and the truck would be full with no excess room for much extra fuel. My 91 Non i/c truck was then nominated to make the run. 650 mile range(distance needed to get to Baton Rouge and back out if no fuel was available) keep in mind that my truck has 300k miles on it. Granted it wasn't the most comfortable ride but it got the job done. I stopped in Memphis and fueled up(+ 10 gallons in jerry cans) I drove all the way in(370 miles), did a short run to deliver an Ice maker(45 miles) and all the way out (350 miles) filled up in Memphis. 39. 1 gallons used(19. 56 mpg)( I was extremely nervous for the last 10 miles looking for fuel... )

I packed about 2600 lbs down and 600 lbs out( an employees wife and infant girl and 11 empty 55 gallon drums to fill up with gasoline for our company trucks to pick up in memphis before driving in... poetic justice) Now our company's purchasing agent has called me to ask what type of diesel trucks the company should look for... I suggested any and all 1st gen trucks they could find... Ha Ha)

I'd like to run some of the trailers coming out of New York, but that's probalby a bit too far for me to travel, even for connecting with someone in the mid-regions. Anything coming doen I-35 towards Oklahoma, I-30 from Arkansas, I-20 through West Texas or I-10 (including the state highway equivilants) through South Texas falls in the zone I can work with. For those hauling trailers or providing info about trailers needing to be hauled it might be helpful to include the type of hitch necessary. I've got the standard Class IV hitch with the tow package provided by DC. It would sure be a bummer to agree to haul a trailer, only to find out at the transfer point that I needed a gooseneck or a 5th Wheel hitch.

Hitches

Crunch, from what I hear they are almost all tag ie bumper pulls. You'll need a 2 5/16 ball and that should get the job done.

I'm located in North east Florida. I have a 3500 with all 3 hitches, & a 35' dovetail flatbed. I can get enough fuel on for 500+ loaded miles.

please contact me if I can be of any assistance.

now we have Rita -- a FEMA repeat??

still too early to be sure, but shaping up that Rita will be a hurricane and eventually strike some part of the Gulf coast, maybe Texas, in about a week. Are we going to let the FEMA bureaucrats screw up another one (i'm referring to the leadership, not the hard workers in the trenches)? Can the TDR membership get organized to help if needed? Seems a lot of TDR members are willing to help.

Here's how I see it:

* Red Cross, Salvation Army, etc. , are excellent T+ a few days to a week, and on out; they're pros at setting up and providing all kinds of assistance; but they're too large and cumbersome to respond to immediate needs -- T+24 - 72 hours

* FEMA will eventually kick in, but they won't reach any substantial organizational level for probably T+ a month or more

* small backwoods areas missed entirely -- saw a report last night that Bogalusa (sp?), LA still hasn't seen a single FEMA or other aid organization, 3 weeks after the disaster, and they were hit hard with wind/tree damage

This tells me there is room for TDR to help. I think the key is getting authorized to get in to affected areas, have some credentials (if the trucks/convoy aren't enough) to get past cops in those 1st 24 - 48 hours.

I see the mission as get essential supplies in, maybe help (cut trees, etc. ) for less than a day, then get out.

Seems to me independent "platoon sized" convoys would work better than one huge convoy. This way, could pick a CB channel for the group that hopefully wasn't overrun with traffic. I love the idea (presented earlier in this thread) of adopting an off-the-beaten-path town that could really use the help.

Maybe best to organize by region we're coming from, so could form up small convoy near beginning of trip.

If any ideas on getting organized, please share.

If Rita meterializes, and depending on where it strikes, I'm willing to join (hopefully group from VA, WV, NC, TN area).
