This rich punk kid that lives a few blocks from me just bought the new Toyota Tundra Crew Max. He said he was impressed with the TV commercial with all the torque this truck supposedly have. He said it has more torque than my truck. I just smiled and said oh yeah? He said for $500 cash he will challenge me on a tug of war. Now that my truck is running again, I took him up on it. We will do it on this abandoned road this weekend. I need advice as I have never done this sort of thing and don’t want to lose my $500 to a gasser. I know he can not pull my truck once I get into the right gear. My question is, what gear should I start? He has an auto and mine is a manual G56. I don’t want to shift too many times because I will lose valuable boost and he might pull me. What SW # should I upload into the Smarty? Appreciate any input. Wish me luck.

using the service brake would be better if you're handy w/ the pedals... you realy want that front brake to keep you planted. momentum is the key is a tug. you've already got a HUGE advantage being the heavier truck.

you really shouldn't have any problem even if you just dump the clutch and let it all hang out, but the best strategy, especially w/ the heavier truck is to stay on the brakes till he's spinning his tires (if the truck's even got the power to do that!) and then drag him home

every drag race a manual transmission vehicle w/o a line locker? more importantly here a burnout? heel hard on the brake, right toe on the go pedal, clutch w/ the left. in this case, just hold yourself hard w/ the brake. you can run up against the brake to build a little boost, but Ii don't think your'e going to need to put a hurtin' on your clutch just to beat this guy

I have never done it, but I say hold the brakes hard, let him start spinning and then let it loose.

Be sure not to stall it when you take off.

You will kick his a**. His truck is lighter and does not have near the power you do.

wow do not use sw9 if you want your clutch to hold. anything short of a southben DD will not hold sw9 very well, especially when you have it loaded with another truck. i would say you have plenty of power in stock form to pull this guy all over the place. i would run sw5 or 6. just to be on the safe side.

then just like the rest have said wait for him to spin then just let the clutch out while supplying plent of the go pedal to ensure you dont stall then hammer it. you will soon be on the way to being $500 richer. after that look into a SBC clutch and really see what sw9 feels like. !!!

Just my personal opinion, but I don't think I would worry about shifting. If you are moving forward with him in tow, what's the point? Besides why take a chance on a clutch miscue?

Is your hitch platform rated for the weight of his vehicle? You don't want to damage anything on your truck.

His truck? LOL

I agree with John. Use the lower gears and just crawl away... If you aren't careful, once you start to slip your clutch, it just starts to slip like it's greased... I would be afraid of lots of rpm and 2nd gear. My G56 can't hardly take any kind of 3rd gear start with the Smarty (and that's empty). With a load, I would say you might get the same problem by a high rpm start in 2nd.

I would: Put the G56 in granny, hold the brakes with the heel, throttle with the toe, and clutch with left foot. Once he starts to spin, just take of normally and let your torque and weight do the rest.

If you had a better clutch, you could start in 2nd and rip him around like a wet rag, but since you don't, I think you can take him easily in granny (but slowly).

I would agree with the low range advise. I would also lower your tire pressure to get a better contact patch, put it in 1st gear/4LO and let it idle away with his 5oo bucks in tow. Would be funnier beating him at idle than dragging him at WOT down the street. Just my $. 02

see if you can get some one to video this. That would make a nice post and plus if the kid ever gets snotty over it, just pop the video in for him to see again!:-laf

J-

double low. hold the brake hard and ease up on the clutch. . . once he starts pulling just ease away from the brake while adding clutch and just slowing walk away while pulling him smoking his tires.

if your handy with the toe heel method mentioned before, 1800-2000rpm 3rd 4lo and pull him sideways

J,

First off, use 4X4 low range 2 nd gear should be fine. Don't use High range!!!!! It would be much harder on the clutch. Do not shift!! Like many said before, hold the brakes w/your right foot heel at first until he starts to spin. Then ease out the clutch w/ minimal throttle. Remember, Your clutch is your weak link. You don't want to get it hot. Especially if he cries foul for some reason and wants to do it again. When the clutch is all the way out then put it to the floor to build up some speed so he feels the speed going backward. :-laf

I once had a tug of war in the sand with my first gen 4X4 with 35 inch BFG's w/ a 5speed getrag against two punks in a jacked up ford ranger and a lifted Toyota 4X4 together. They were tied together nose to tail then tied to me. They were camped next to us. I had a blast draging them around both of our camps twice. My buds were laughing so hard i didn't want to stop. They said that on the second lap they were done trying to stop me w/ their engines and resorted to standing on their brakes. Didn't matter:-laf. They were soo ****** that i almost didn't get my $50 from each of them. But they were young punks and decided they better pay up or i was going to drag them around some more :-laf

Back to your whooping

Smarty on 3 or less. You have plenty of power stock don't hurt the clutch

Make sure their is some 3rd party observer that takes the money from both of you first( it is a lot easier than trying to get your winnings after)

Also, try to use a strap not a chain. If you do use a chain absolutly cover it w/ a large thick blanket or two in case of breakage.

Drop tire preasure to about 25-30 lbs and make sure your attachment point is higher than his for better traction.

After you kill him, offer to ride w/ him over to the Dodge dealer so he can trade his truck in on a real one:-laf

Definately get this on video!!!

Glad I saw this post and don't intend to steal it . Thought I would get an opinion or two while we are on the tug of war subject. There is a guy at work that just got himself a new to him 03 ( I think ) Duradud. He has been after me for a tug of war which I have not been interested in for these reasons 1) mine 2wd his 4wd, 2) his sits higher than mine, 3) mine is a stick his is an auto. Granted I have added a few ponies with the Edge and his is stock I still don't think it would be a good idea. Granted not as easy or fun as a Tundra but, what do ya'll think?
